Abalone

Just to tease a bit.
The abalone season opened today.
I got 48 of them.
Small, but abalone none the less.

We are allowed to take out 20 per person.

BUT

The abalone is only open for 5 Sundays each year. Also, you need to be in the water at 7am and out by 8am. Only one hour..... thats it.

The abalone we get here close to us is called Rhoe's abalone (or black lip). Legal size is only 60mm and they only grow to 140mm. The usual green lip we are all use to in South Africa lives a little bit more south from where we live.

The crayfish season is opening next week. 8 per person per day for 8 months. You can go and catch them any day between sunrise and sunset, and you are allowed to use SCUBA gear.

I was hoping to save up some more $$ in order to buy a secondhand kayak and drop the crayfish pots that way.But that will have to wait for now......

Moet se: Hierdie thread het my so bietjie warm onder kraag laat voel, totdat ek onthou het jy het verhuis en woon nou onderkant ons...Die grootte lyk vir my kleinerig, maar dis 'n ander spesie as hier in ons RSA. Dis omtrent die grootte waar kommersiele perlemoenkwekers (aquaculture buite die see) die goed oes vir Oosterse markte - natuurlik teen ongelooflike pryse!
As jy hierdie gedoen het in ons landjie and piesangs, dan het jy nou waarlik gekwalifiseer om in Aus te mag woon!

Ok, net omdat ek tien teen een nooit weer dit sal proe nie sal ek twee van my perlemoen resepte deel:
1: Maak 'n lekker houtvuurtjie. Maak die perlemoen skoon. Gryp 'n stuk vuurmaakhout en slaat die perlemoen sodat dit kan ophou dink aan styf wees. Braai oor 'n koel vuurtjie met knoffel en eet dit van die rooster af.
2: Mend koekmeel en fyn swartpeper helfte-helfte. Maak 'n pan met 4mm diep olyfolie lekker warm. Sny die perlemoen in 4mm skywe en bedek met meel/peper mengsel. Braai in die pan tot lekker gaar - die peper werk soos tenderiser en die skywe word so sag soos murg.

This thread takes me back to my student days in Cape Town, way back in the 70's. On weekends during the crayfish season we would go "kreefing" up the West coast. At that time I would invariably be able to swop a kreef with the other divers for up to 4 Perlemoen. Absolutely loved these Abalone (Perlemoen), but they are but a distant memory. History will judge the Chinese harshly for their part in stripping natural resources far from their homeland.

I read the other day in the newspaper that 99% of the Oz abalones are destined for the Asian markets every year. They do have the odd poacher, but not on scale we know in SA.

...... but it will come.

@ $200 per Kilo minimum ...... someone is bound to start poaching on a grand scale.

I remember when they closed abalone diving in SA. We were devastated. When my wife fell pregnant I still told her that our child will never taste abalone.

60mm is the minimum.
The ones I got was between 75mm and 95mm.

This specie only grows to a max of 140mm so 90mm is considered BIG.

Next week the crayfish opens
