Yes diesel versus petrol, very interesting.
Been running diesel vehicles since late 80's.
Toyota 2.4' diesels, one problem at 280 000 km, camshaft oil seal and enjin rebuilt.
The other one bit less km and no hassels
GM (Opel/Izuzu) no problems on both way past 160 000 - turbos
now Ford 2.5 DT and at 50 000 still going.
    Noisy, smelly and so on.
BUT cheap to run and lots of low down power at reasonable price.

Evolution Diesel Premium + contains hardly any sulphur (0.005% to be exact). This reduces harmful exhaust gas emissions and limits air pollution.

    Personnally I prefer petrol engines.....

    Diesel engine=
Wait 5mins in car like an idiot before switching off - so that the turbo can cool down; Oil change every 5000kms; 1 bottle of 2-stroke every now and then; EGT monitors to monitor temperatures; injectors every +/- 100000kms (if you lucky); etc
All this so that the poor thing doesnt break!
sorry guys but it is monday

Just remember that modern alloys dissipate heat faster so turbos cool down faster without danger of warping.
Turbo design has advanced so cooling ports are more efficient.
Sulphur content is dropping in diesel so 20'000km oil change intervals will be here soon (as in Europe)
Petrol and diesel engines both soot up due to EGR and PCV systems so both can benefit from a bit of clean burning 2SO.
A petrol engine can also self destruct if the mixture isn't correct so an EGT gauge is a valuable monitoring system for petrol as well.

The diesel engine is advancing and the slight drawbacks have already been outweighed by the advantages IMHO and it's still advancing in it's favour over petrol engine by eliminating the cons as far as possible as mentioned in the points above.

Its not far off where diesels have all the benefits of petrols with none of the drawbacks.

Petrol engines are going smaller with big twin and tri- turbos as well.

The day they start putting diesel engines in race cars I'll take note. For now a diesel is an implement not a vehicle. O and I also drive diesels

    Diesel vehicles have wone the Le Mans 24 Hour race in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.

So much for an implement, or is it now a racing implement ?

Although very infomative literature, I don't quite agree!

I currently drive a '03 Nissan Hardbody with 237000km on the clock. Yes it's a turbo and yes its a commonrail diesel! I don't have ANY problems with this bakkie. It is my FIRST diesel and I was very sceptical, but it has given me less crap and hassles than ANY of the petrol vehicles I had. I think the bottom line is that if you want to drive a diesel bakkie like a petrol golf, it WILL give you problems!

I admit I miss the sound of a petrol, BUT with less hassles and problems, loads of torque, and cost effectiveness of the vehicle.... I'll stay with my diesel!

This shows how fast, powerful, reliable, economical and eco-friendly some modern Diese engines can be.

Clearance of 1.5 to 2 microns? What do you mean by this? The injector holes are 0.1mm for instance(recent car mag article on diesel engines), where in the injector's diesel path is the 1.5 to 2 micron clearance?
I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

Lots of information but still little conclusive recommendations. Are there any value on using these Wynn/Shield Diesel Cleaning stuff one can buy at Midas/Spares places. I have a 3.2 Pajero with 280,000 kms on the clock and I would do whatever needed to maintain the engine as best as possible.

Should I add a bottle of 2-stroke oil every 2 or 3 fillups, every fill-up or only every 5,000 kms ? The shield "Diesel cleaner" recommends a bottle (250 ml) every 5,000 kms.

What about these oil additioners such as Prolong etc. ?

    Pieter,
0.005% is equal to 5000ppm! PPM is parts per million so 50ppm is 0.00005% sulphur content.
