    Reply from Head Ranger in Kgalagadi

    The road from Leeuwdril towards has been opened under the following conditions:

    1. Guests can drive all the way up to Rooiputs waterhole then either turn around or take the turn towards Rooiputs camp and left immediately towards KIJ KIJ (Without a permit to drive the mentioned stretch of road).
    2. Guests are still NOT allowed to just drivE through the veld between the Botswana road and the South African side (If caught doing it fines will be issued).
    3. The mentioned road can be entered from KIJ KIJ side or from Rooiputs side.
    4. Guests doesn’t have to drive the detour from KIJ KIJ to Auchterlonie.

    Normal park rules will still be enforced as set out in the permits

    Any guest going to Rooiputs camp will still have to be in possession of the Botswana permit, BUT an arrangement has been made due to the road closure that guests can use the Botswana part of the road leading from Rooiputs waterhole to Kij Kij without a permit.
    The road is not in a bad state and is easy to drive on.
    Just a friendly warning take note of point #2, if you are caught off road you will be escorted out of the park. These guys do not play and writing fines is not high on their priority list

    Enjoy, I am jealous

    Additional info on Kgalagadi:

    Dec is hot, very hot or just vrek warm. You have a good chance to see a thunder storm or two, to see one of the Kalahari tsunamis is something you will never forget. Being desert the humidity is quite low which makes the heat more bearable. Nossob is the better option after rains as the game tend to move over to that side.

    If you go walkabout at night even if just to the bathroom wear shoes and not plakkies or sandals, there are a lot of scorpions around. Take an ultra violet lamp and go hunting at night, you will be surprised.

    Take your own drinking water as the stuff they call water is not fit to wash dishes never mind drinking. Now might be a good time to fit that water tank to your vehicle.

    Be aware of your surroundings if you stop at a picnic site, places like Dikbaardskolk are well known for having lion lie inside the toilets to escape the heat, they have animal proof gates on them but the lions don,t know that and still enter.

    If you see a snake cross the road give it space as it could try and get under the vehicle after shade and find its way in to the engine compartment Last thing you want is a cobra under the bonnet

    ORN it will be hot with occasional showers.

    Correction...it will be VERY hot with occasional THUNDER STORMS!

    We were there in Feb this year and man did we love it!

    The roads are corrugated like you wont believe so take a few spanners with to tighten loose bolts and nuts. No, I'm not joking.

    Fantastic place!

    Yes it is! Start early morning and take it easy. Lots of big lions up there!

    Nossob has a very productive hide that can be accessed from the camp and the waterholes around the camp have produced some spectacular sightings.

    Nossob is a good start point for the bitterpan route

    A few tips:

    1. Picnic spots are few and far between. Take it easy on the liquids;

    2. Check your shoes in the morning before putting them on;

    3. If you are camping, make sure you drag your tent about ten meters away from where it was pitched to see what jumps out from underneath before you attempt to pack it up;

    4. Take polarized sunglasses;

    5. Take your binoculars and a book on birds of prey, you will see plenty;

    6. As stated above, picnic spots are not fenced so watch out and don't go exploring too far from your vehicle. We almost got out at a picnic spot but luckily two German tourists stopped us from getting out. There was a huge male lion lying behind the toilet;

    7. Make sure your aircon is working properly;

    8. Tighten all nuts and bolts halfway through your holiday!

    9. Most important. Adapt to the rhythm of the Kgalagadi. Get up early and go to bed early. We tried to braai after sunset and it was almost impossible with all the bugs at Tweerivieren. You'll see everyone lighting fires between 5 and 6.

    Nossob and Mata Mata had less bugs for some reason. I know you think you won't let a few bugs bother you but trust me...these aren't just a few bugs! Camel spiders and Cape Cobras are common in the camp sites. Don't walk around at night without a flashlight.

    10. Tighten all nuts and bolts at the end of your holiday!

    Are you staying over at Mata Mata as well?

    It is most definitely on I will look a pretty big idiot having the camp all by myself I have a few smaller details to finalise and then I will post on forum.

    Keep your dairy clear, if things work the way I am planning it is going to be one to remember. I have secured the entire Bontle campsite for the weekend and hopefully a few other aces up my sleeve.

    The place is in a desert so the mercury can get pretty high but, and this is a major concern, the humidity is low and the slightest breeze cools you down. As for the roads it is really a pot luck thing, the bulldozers regularly scrape the roads and then each of the big camps have a tyre kind of contraption that is dragged behind a vehicle that does mitigate the worst corrugations. Best is to drop your tyre pressure to 1,5 and that goes far to smooth the ride.

    Just to add to Fanatic's advice on the raprors, if you see a lot of pale chanting goshawks ( the greyish raptors with the long legs ) walking almost in line abreast, keep your eyes peeled for the yellow cape cobra. These birds have learned that the snakes often flush rodents from their burrows while hunting and they follow the snakes for an easy meal.

    it goes into the high 30's even 40's.

    Not to bad though as its a dry heat as Henk said.

    Don't worry, you'll love the place!

    Order 'roosterbrood' from reception at Nossob. Very nice!

    Taken from Wikitravel:

    "In summer (October to April), the temperature in the Kgalagadi climbs up to 40 degrees Celsius and sometimes higher. The annual rainfall is rarely more than 100 mm, and some years it even stays below 50 mm. Typically this is the time of the iconic Kalahari thunderstorms."
