www.landroverexpwp.co.za / http://www.facebook.com/landroverexpwp Very good, learnt a lot, specially in recovery, they take also people with Mitsubishi We did drive fully loaded, cause we were planning to cross the Kalahari .... Until today I regret that I did not that last one dune:

I presume the best stop over from Cape Town is Upington?
or Calvinia: Rolbos Guesthouse or Klipwerf Campsite, Myl 250 is a nice restaurant.

or Tankwa Karoo NP: Pyper se Boom Campsite (nice, sometimes strong winds in the evening) no facilities, but I heard they builded somewhere something with ablutions.

Do not go to The Eiland in Upington, its dangerous there, they rob you.
Weve been robbed in 2009, they just came into our tent. Its well known in Upington, but they don't do anything.

Better take Sakkies se Arkie, http://www.arkie.co.za/

Kalahari Trails (60 km before TR) http://www.kalaharitrails.co.za/index.php?p=1&lang=eng Prof Raza is a specialist about wildlife at Kalahari

Would anyone be able to recommend a route for our upcoming trip to Kgalagadi in December
From CT its the best route to drive via Tankwa Karoo and Calvinia to Keimoes and than Upington. If you have time, take the road to Augrabies, Springbok and than Namaqua NP on the way back.
They have 4 wonderful chalets in Namaqua NP and its worth a visit all year round, not only in the flower season. You must preebook them, the guys in the park do not have any idea about computers....

I knew, it was a mistake to book KNP this year ....

You must enjoy it very much, Camp staff and all their children will sing
Christmas Songs at Nossob at the 25. 12.

Take some extras with you for them .....

We will be leaving from Pinetown, KZN. Not sure if we should go via Kimberley, then the R64 to Groblershoop before joining the N10 to Upington; or head up to Gauteng and get onto the N14 via Kuruman to Upington.

    Thanks and Regards

Hi guys, what an amazing thread! I have just spend an hour reading through everything and enjoying the wonderful pics.

We leave CT on 14 Oct, have one night in a chalet in Twee Rivieren, then onto Mata Mata to camp for three nights. Then four nights at Nossob, one of which we'll our trailer and head to Gharagab for the night.

Can't wait - what sort of weather conditions can we expect?

    Thanks
    Beth

    Hi Beth,

it will be warm, but normally not sooo hot, 30 - 35 at day
12 - 20 at night, may be thunderstorms.

October is an ideal month, not too hot, not too cold,

    Enjoy it!

Thanks for this info. As a first-time visitor, any other advice (besides all the great info on this thread)??

We have done camping trips into Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia before, but not to Kgalagadi!

Sorry but I'm unfamilliar with the Kimberley route.

Maybe someone else will be able yo help.

I trust you are stopping over for the night? It's 1300 km from Pinetown to Tweerivieren.

    Hi Beth,

    in short

    - deflate your tyres at TR
    - take drinking water and normal water for coffee with you, water 1,5 ltr costs R 17 or so, normally no 5 l cans - Water at some taps in TR is desalted, but still not so good
    - take wood with you, its expensive as well there
    - Cellphone reception only at Twee Riveren
    - Order fresh bread at Reception in Nossob for the evening
    - no icecream at Nossob at Mata Mata, but icecubes
    - fresh veggies only at TR and only sometimes, its getting better nowadays
    - ATM only at TR
    - Fill up fuel around mid day, it will cost a lot of time at 4 when everybody goes out on a game drive
    - drive really slowly and take your time, you will see much, much more and preserve your car, we mostly drive 15 or so
    - ask rangers for sightings or look into the sightings book at reception
    - always take your permit with you when you out and give it back when your in (funny and useless, but they will fine you.....) You get the permit when you enter
    - book a game walk with Melissa at Nossob
    - book a morning drive at TR, it might lead you to a leopard with two cubs
    - look for an owl in a tree right side after you leave TR (Verraux Eagle Owl)
    - look for owls at Nossob and Mata Mata, look for small spotted genets as well (Pearl spotted owlet, White faced owl)
    - between Nossob and Unions end look for birds, its getting winter in Europe and there might come a lot of migratory birds in the park, look for brown hyena as well

    ENJOY IT!

    Hi Delrae,

We went up in July and went the Bloem-Kimberley-Groblershoop-Uppington route. We overnighted at Lilydale in Mokala which is +/- 40km from Kimberley. This was about 720km from Howick so was a nice stop over point. There are obviously many places to stay over in Kimberley but I didn't investigate any of these. Let me know if you need any info on this route.

    Hi Southerndreams,

Do you by any chance know somebody at Kgalagadi , who can tell me how many kids there are. I have been talking to a few of my customers about your idea of stationary and they are on board we just need the numbers. Got two cases of bubbles(96 bottles) and 40 hula hups.
    Regards.

    What a great idea!

You won't see the park rangers' kids or family but you can certainly hand the staff the gifts to pass on.

    I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

I think you should PM Hbannink for more info. He knows the park and the people well.

    Hey Guy,

thats great! At Christmas one will see all the kids.

Unfortunatly I know only the Field Guide Melissa personally, shes at Nossob and there no cellphone Reception at Nossob. All other rangers are also out of any reach.

    Try Hbannink .

    Have a wondeful stay!

Best guy to contact is the head ranger Jan Kriel:

    [email protected]

Jannie will be able to give you the numbers you require. He will be overjoyed at your gesture as his staff and their well being is of utmost importance to him.

I think after this trip you will agree that the Kgalagadi has a lot to offer, open spaces with large prides of magnificent lions, amazing sunsets and colours to keep any photographer in 7th heaven but best of all are the people, genuine, sincere and bubbly personalities.

Hi all. Been lurking here for a while. We are planning a trip in November. I have 2 young daughters (5 & 3) and I would like to ask whether it would be better to take an Echo 4x4 trailer or to stay in the bungalow's/chalet's? We plan on staying at Twee Riverien, Mata-Mata, Nossob and at the Tented Camp. Can someone let me know whether there are power points at all of these camps for my trailer. I have read that the power cuts out at 22h00 in the bungalow's, would that be the same for the power points if there are any?
Also do people generally take extra fuel along in jerrycans, if so how much would you recommend?
Is one spare tyre for the car/trailer sufficient?
Thanks in advance for any reply's
