Overland budget, how many dollars per day??

Hi

Wife and I heading to Zim, Mozam, Malawi, TZ then return Zambia, Namibia and home. Probably on the road for little over 2 months kicking off on Boxing Day this year. Thing is I am battling to work out an accurate budget - does anyone know how many dollars per day I should budget on whilst on the road - i.e. excluding all the pre stuff that needs to be bought?

We will be camping, going into the odd park / attraction (not every one we pass) and at this point driving a 3L petrol vehicle...

Any advice appreciated!

Catt and Dawie (Freeflyd of this forum) spent a year driving frm SA to UK recently, and budgetted $100 per day. This covered both of them, the car, ferry crossings, park fees, some chalets & hotels etc. They said that they weren't too far out at the end. Bear in mind that this included the wildly expensive Tanzanian parks, and climbing Kili.

So, put aside $100 per day and hope to spend $75 per day!

It was our average spending for the entire family, 2 Adults and 2 Children, including camping, food, drinks and diesel. Never did more than about 300 km/day.

Sounds about right. On our recent 22 night Malawi trip, the most expensive accommodation was the two nights at Tshipise at R1050 /night sleeping 4 on the way back. On a par with this, was the Nyika chalets.

Over 5600 km, total cost for 4 adults (i.e. not including malaria medication, travel insurance, etc, but including border crossings and all that entails - average R500/border) came to $40 pp per day.

Us - the parents - only camped two nights - in the car - the rest always in ensuite accommodation, oh yes, and 3 nights on the deck at Domwe at R180 pp, including mattress rental.

The total fuel cost was around R8400, so if you take that off the R25000 over 23 days, you'll get around $30 pp/day, onto which you can now add your own distance/fuel/cost calculation.

Fuel price about the same as here - if you can get at the pump - and I reckon you will easily get 12l/100km or better, as long as you do not tow or have something on the roof.
