    Default Towbar replacement/Modification

    Morning all,

I am using the normal Disco 3 clip-on towbar, and has been using it for quite a while with a normal trailer. However, I now have a Off-road caravan, and the tow ball is slightly too low. Is there a "standard" replacement ball you can clip in like the original, without the downward u-shape turn, or anything else you guys can recommend?

    Thanks

Yes there is many replacements, the clip in kind from LR is VERY expensive. Front Runner and a number of other companies have developed a tow bar that is higher.

I dont like their design as they use the recovery point to fasten the new tow bar. I al going to design another clip in tow bar at some stage and cut it with a CNC machine from high tensile steel that will be a bit higher than the old one.

Here is a picture from what is offered in the market.

Following your post and photo's in September 11 wrt "I al going to design another clip in towbar at some stage and cut it with a CNC machine from high tensile steel that will be a bit higher than the old one"

Did you eventually manufacture a tow bar and if so what was the outcome. As I’m looking for a “clip on” tow bar to accommodate my 4x4 trailer. Any suggestions?

    Regards
    G

    Hi Gert

I have drawn it up but not yet made it. I am not really rushed as I dont pull a trailer.
I will post when I made it.

I've got the Frontrunner one to tow the trailer (perfect height). Very nice and sturdy with the only downside of being picked up by the parking sensors. Either remove when not in use or disconnect the inner two sensors.

I like strenght and aestetics (spelling?) so I want to make the same thing as FR but I dont want to lose the recovery point.

George on my Disco3 I had the inner 2 sensors rotated. Worked a charm.
Does not work on D4 since they are flat.

If you use the towball with the pin I think you still have a recovery point. Problem is it stands out even further making pdc useless.

Ah, seems like a plan. Rotated, ie switch the left and right hand side sensors or just turn them upside down?

Just turn them to slope away from the towbar. Unfortunately not an easy job. Had it done when the fitted the frontrunner towbar.

I use the Frontrunner towbar with the ball and pin towball fitted - still have a recovery point this way and my pdc still works fine.

I have the G4outdoor one on my Discovery4 and it is a nice height for off road towing, strong enough for off road towing(SABS tested), leaves the recovery hook intact and does not interfere with the rear parking sensors when fitted. It can also be removed like the Land Rover one if needed.

Beautiful design in my opinion. www.g4outdoor.co.za
