During the July School Holiday we did a trip from Johannesburg, north through Zimbabwe to Vic Falls, then west through Zambia to Namibia, and then slowly south through Namibia back to the Northern Cape, and then home.

This was a road trip - not overland - and we used B&B type accommodations because we had a lot of ground to cover. We were two families traveling together. Our vehicle was our Fortuner D4D manual 4x2, and our friends in their Chev Captiva LTZ 4x4. Both vehicles proved themselves well suited to a road trip like this. Our budget was about R1,500 per night for a family of 4 for B&B - and most nights we managed to stick to that budget.

The Route was like this:

  • Johannesburg - Beitbridge - Bulawayo (Nesbitt Castle 1 night)
  • Bulawayo - Victoria falls (Maramba River Lodge, Zambia 2 nights)
  • Victoria Falls - Katima Mulilo (Kalizo Lodge, Namibia 2 nights)
  • Katima - Tsumeb (Kupferquelle 2 nights)
  • Tsumeb - Etosha (Etosha Safari Camp 1 night)
  • Etosha - Damara Desert (Damara Mopani Desert Camp 1 night)
  • Damara - Swakopmund (Sandfields Guest house 4 nights)
  • Swakopmund - Sossus Vlei (Namib Desert Camp 1 night)
  • Namib Desert - Keetmanshoop (Birds Mansions Hotel 1 night)
  • Keetmanshoop - Luderitz & Kolmanskop (Haus Sandrose - 2 nights)
  • Luderits - Fish River Canyon (Canyon Roadhouse 1 night)
  • Fish River - Augrabies Falls (Vergelegen Guest House 1 night)
  • Kakemas - Johannesburg.

We did about 8,500km in all. This was a fantastic adventure - a first for us and our friends. For the full story, with daily updates and a number of pictures, see the blog we put together as we traveled: http://zimzamnam.blogspot.com.

This was our first African adventure, but it sure won't be our last!
