Post Leisure Wheels’ Chinese double cab shoot-out – we need your help!

Come all those double cab experts, here is your chance

Leisure Wheels’ Chinese double cab shoot-out – we need your help!

On face value Chinese double cab bakkies offer a great deal of bakkie for not that much money. But how good are they really? And which one offers the best compromise between value for money, performance, ability, longevity, and comfort? To find the answer to this burning question we need the help of the 4x4community website users.

    It works like this:

Leisure Wheels will host a shoot-out between five new Chinese double cab contenders at the (new) African Outdoor Group venue near Hartbeespoort Dam, on Friday, 22 July. We are looking for 10 volunteers to help us drive and evaluate all five bakkies, using a set route (gravel and tar) and by completing a comprehensive scoring sheet. Food and beverages will be provided, courtesy of AOG. Of course, there will be a few surprises on the day too (in regards to the actual testing, and the route).

    There is one catch though:
You need to currently drive a double cab bakkie (but not a Chinese one). This way our testers can compare apples with apples.

All you need to do is to make your own way to African Outdoor Group’s venue, to arrive there on Friday morning at 8:45-9am. You will be briefed on the day’s proceedings, and meet the vehicles up close and personal. From there the driving tests will commence, followed by lunch at AOG. We should be done and dusted (literally!) by around 3pm.

This is your chance to make your opinion count and help decide which one of the new-generation of Chinese double cab bakkies is the best of the lot.

If you are interested in joining us on Friday, 22 July, please send the following details to [email protected]:

    Name:
    Age:
    Contact numbers:
Current double cab that you are driving:

Please note that our testing panel will be “enlisted” on a first come, first served basis.

Other than having almost zero response (2 only) from forum members this event is now cancelled until further, if any, notice.

It seems the manufacturers are not so keen on having the bakkies tested by any panel!

Hell that gives a lot of confidence to all these new drivers of said Chinese models that so frequently drive past you nowadays. Nice one manufacturers and/or distributors!

    Maybe people didnt get this.

    If I read this correctly.

    The invitation is to.

Please guys, no funny comments, this is an opportunity to see for yourselves and probably have loads of fun and fame in the process.

    Hi

That was the intention, but note too many of the manufacturers pulled out, so the event is now cancelled.

    Food for thought.

Dirk this is actually very sad as I actually believe that the future of great motoring could very well be in the hands of these Chinese manufacturers.

According to latest Leisure Wheels they have bought more vehicles made in the good old USA than what was actualy sold in the states itself over the last year or so. Furthermore they dropped taxes (something our government can learn from) on all locally manufactured vehicles and had something like 46% growth in vehicle sales where the rest of the world has been stagnant.

Obviously they have a less sofisticated market and they cater more for cheaper and economical vehicles but we have seen how they have grown at an incredible pace and I expect some more luxury vehicles to come from that side of the world in the not too distant future.

    Times they are a changing.

I am on my way back from the river trip (Limpopo) to Durban, and in my normal exploring fashion, I have taken the less travelled roads.

I have no opinion, but let me assure you, I have seen more Mahindra workhorses on the farm roads then any other brand. And Mahindra agencies in all the small dorps.

    Times they are a changing.

Edit - I know Mahindra is not Chinnese, but it is a sign of the times.

It's sad to hear that the manufactures pulled out, but what is even more sad is that there was only 2 responses from the forum.

Would've jumped at such an invitation.

    Default DC Bakkie test

I only got back on the forum on the 18th after a great weekend. Very short notice to move appointments on the 22nd.

Maybe more advanced notice will do the trick w.r.t attendance next time??

    Default Too late

Wow, posted on Friday at 12:53 and only 2 responses before Tuesday morning, so canceled??
I would have loved to go, but was in George for a fantastic weekend, only saw this now.
Surely an immediate response is not the prerequisite to a successful outing?
Perhaps a notice period of less than a week is a little too small .............
I agree with the rest, perhaps next time.
Then we can compare the Japanese to the Chinese

Don't know what they are worried about.

They won't be compared to a Jeep or a Land Rover, just the odd Toyota and Nissan...
