    Default Controversial debate continues

Here the lates info re: Yellow Fever vaccination.
    http://www.africantravel.com/whats-n...ed-for-zambia/

Unfortunatly this statement is not dated but Google reveals the date of posting as the 17 Jan 2012 and as a follow-up of the intial announcement of YF checks published on May 2011.
If we believe the content then the YF vaccin rule is NOT enforced.

I'm hearing that the Yellow Fever thing IS now being enforced. I suggest you check with Bertie (Mfuwefarmer) who lives in Zambia but regularly returns to SA. He will know the latest.

Zambia added to list of countries requiring Yellow Fever vaccination
    26 August 2011
South Africans travelling to Zambia will now be required to have a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate following a global Yellow Fever risk assessment conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Zambia`s status has been classified as a low risk. However, as Yellow Fever is vaccine preventable, and travellers to and from countries with a low risk of transmission still risk contracting or importing Yellow Fever into South Africa, the Department of Health in South Africa has updated the Yellow Fever vaccination policy to include Zambia.
The new policy will be effective from 1 October 2011. From this date, a valid Yellow Fever certificate will be required for travellers over 1 year old:
    · travelling from Zambia, or
    · having been in transit through a Yellow Fever risk country including Zambia.
Yellow Fever is an infectious vector-borne disease that is caused by a virus. It is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito vector.

You simply cant take a chance without the paper work, unless you want to be sent back. Sometimes they don't look at it and you could be lucky. On our last trip by road we were asked but they did not look at the detail, just flashed the yellow cert. At airports they do check.

We know of a bus load of people that were sent back at Beitbridge.

So why take the chance..just get it?

You need to get YF updated!!!

For malaria we use Co-Artem or Co- Arinate and always have 3 -4 treatments with us when we travel. However always seek medical attention when you supect Malaria, but you can start the course straight away.

I repeat: Always seek medical attention when Malaria is suspected!!

    Hi,

I found this on the internet which says that you don't need a certificate. However, may be it is best to have one.

If you live in South Africa, or are going to South Africa from Zambia, you need a Yellow Fever certificate. Trust me on this

    Default Yellow fever

    Hi,

I have just spoken to a friend who was in Zambia last month about YF and this was his reply:

Hi Niall - if over age of 60 you can get lette of exemption from travel clinic.
Kazangulu was 3 hours - horrendous - lots of tauts, all wearing 'official' badges, and then want mpney for services!!! This is only going into Zambia.

    Let's make this absolutely clear.

At the moment, if you want to go to, or return to, South Africa after visiting Zambia, then you will require a Yellow Fever certificate.

what is still unclear is if you are returning to RSA via another country (e.g. through Botswana). I have asked several officials at different borders and got different stories. Can anyone confirm what the time period is between last entry to Zambia and first entry to RSA? I have been told anything from 6 days to 30 days

Incubation time for YF is between 3 - 13 days according to medics

    Its is actually simple:
SA requires you to have a YF certificate if you are visiting Zambia, although we have not had YF in in Zambia.

How do they police it is up to them. Dont think they worry much about border based control ie access by road but if you fly you will be asked for your YF.

I know of one case where the individual was asked for his YF entering Zambia at Livingstone. He did not have and that was it...no entry.

All you need is one official to get smart and it ould upset all your plans or add addisional stress so why not just get it. That is what we have done and for the next 10yrs we dont have any YF worries.

Since this thread hasn't been updated for a few years, I may as well throw a new log on the fire. I think the latest update is that South African's no longer require a YF certificate, as stated in this article from February 2015:
    http://traveller24.news24.com/News/N...ambia-20150203

Travellers heading to Zambia from South Africa will no longer be required to get a yellow fever vaccination, the Department of Health has announced.

Tourism Update reports that the decision was made at the World Health Assembly in Geneva on Friday and lifted with immediate effect.

According to the Lusaka Times, the decision comes after the World Health Organisation confirmed that Zambia had low yellow fever exposure status.
If anyone has any contrary information, please correct me on this!

I would still recommend visiting a travel clinic that can advise you on the risk in the area you would be traveling. You need to get some malaria prophylactics in any case

    YF not required

BUT MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT STUFF FOR MALARIA!

With all the rain malaria is on the up.
At a clinic in Zambia last week there was a 60% positive rate!

As far as I know there are no yellow fever vaccination certificates required at present. But check with your medical insurance and send a message to Stan Weakley on this forum.

I might not be up to date, but I have not seen anything recently on Zambia and any change in their yellow fever vaccination requirements. Yellow fever does not occurr in South Africa and Zambia at present only requires evidence of vaccination if you are traveling from a country where yellow fever occurrs.

The scare involving Zambia of a few years ago seems to have subsided. That said, remember that any yellow fever vaccination is now held by the WHO and other authorities to be effective for life. If you have an old yellow fever vaccination certificate you should be able to persuade the facility that administered it to update the certificate without revaccination.

Bottem line, YF vaccination not required for Zambia at present, but check closer to time in case of any changes. Your local travel clinic should be able to give definitive and up to date advice, give them a call a couple of weeks before you leave.

Just bear in mind that if you have travelled in the past year to a country that is YF listed then it is best to have proof of YF vaccination.
