As far as I remember the 1.8 only came out in 4x2. So if you want 4x4, its the 2liter.
What do you plan to do with the car?

Hi all,
I am looking at buying an older model RAV4 for roughly R100K - R130K. Definitely the 5 door, but not sure of anything else.
Therefore a few questions:
1. Is the 1.8 too weak?
2. Is the non-4x4 version worth it?
3. What should I lookout for before buying?
4. Any known problems I should be aware of?
5. What sort of kms on the clock is acceptable for a 2002 RAV4?
Any other advice is highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Fredel

I am not that interested in serious 4X4 driving, but would like to maybe tow a caravan with it at some stage and do some weekend gravel roads with it. Would the 1.8 be OK for the caravan and what sort of fuel consumption can I expect on either the 1.8 or 2l?
Thanks again for any help!
I have a 2010 2l and I think that is "pap". Would not think of towing a caravan with it. Maybe a small trailer.

for that money you can buy a Cruzer 80 or Prado 90...
I almost bought a Rav4 3 years ago, but my mates said it looks like a girls car and I went and bought an Xtrail....then the forum bug bit and I sold the Nissan and bought an Prado.
1) you recently joined the forum with 2 posts
2) later you will start reading and posting on the forum
3) you will want a proper 4x4 after that
I was in the same boat, bought an Xtrail (lovely little softroader, reliable, economical etc.) but not a proper 4x4 and very limited in application.
I then sold it and bought a Prado 90. OK, it's heavy on juice...cant get past that, otherwise its som much better than a softroader in every single way, for me at least.
