Fortuner 4x4 Auto vs Manual: Fuel Consumption Comparison

I have the face lift since september, a 4x4 d4d auto. I am currently sitting on 10l/100km and this is mainly city driving and about 40 min bumper to bumper traffic x 2 daily. I have managed to get it below 9.0 on a few occasions on the long road, but then again I dont race the engine and i just chug along

same here.

Manual, 12,000km on the clock.

For starters I could not get 10km/l, now I do get it and the occational 10.5km/l.
Fully loaded with trailer this drops to +- 9km/l.

I do drive conservatively aswell.

Did 6539km up to date on new facelift manual 4x4 (D4D). Did only one long trip to coast with fully loaded trailer, rest is city driving, about 90 minutes per day. Average consumption is 9.8km/l, best is 10.7km/l and worst 9.3km/l (all calculated as on board is always about 1km/l over optimistic).

have never resetted the computer and this included around 7000km with echo 4 and 5ooo with luggage trailer , very little offroad or sand work

Comparable route, comparable driving pattern over same period (~6m)

My first Fortuner (5/2006) ave ~9.5 km/l, my new one 8.9 km/l

That first one was very special re this, even when I sold it at ~130K all interested parties commented on how well it performed (NO CHIP). I even got up to ~13km/l with it down to Durbs. I battled to get 10.5 km/l now.

(Maybe that irritating whine on the prop shaft (or wherever) has something to do with it )

BTW - the onboard computer in both my Fortuner's is totally unreliable, only tank-to-tank make any sense.

Got my 3L D4D D/C 4X4 manual in March 2011 - Ave fuel consumption over 27 500km is 10.46l/100km (9.56km/l) - the onboard computer indicates 10.1km/l. Ave km/tank is 764.8km. Oh and don't forget - I released 661.1kg CO2 into the air over the period!

That sounds about right and in line with my average consumption (calculated) of 10.5km/l on my Hilux 4x2 with 120,000km on the clock.

I drive Sandton traffic to Karoo dirt roads.

My 2012 3.0 4x4 auto has now done 5,500 km and I was very surprised to find that it is actually slightly less thirsty than my previous (2006) 3.0 4x4 manual. I drive at speeds rarely exceeding 120 km/h and my average consumption when not towing is around 11.3 km/l. I mostly use the cruise control on the open road, except on steep inclines where I know it will kick back to a lower gear, when I will help it by allowing the speed to drop slightly instead of trying to maintain the set speed at high revs.

When towing my Echo 3, it comes down to an average of about 8,7 km/l. The Echo 3 is aerodynamically "challenged" and very sensitive to wind direction. With no wind or a slight tailwind, I average slightly above 10 km/l, but with even a slight breeze from the front the average would drop to around 8 km/l.

After only about 5,550 km I still find it quite strange that the auto would be lighter on fuel than my previous manual (based on actual consumption and not the trip computer). Also, I was surprised to find that at 115 km/h the car is almost idling at 2,100 revs, where the manual would run slightly higher at about 2,200 revs at the same speed.

This goes somewhat against Toyota's own consumption figures, I know, but I am certainly not complaining.
