    Just to add some context to this little trip;

    I traveled the route from Kasane to Nata in early Jan, the 207 km from just North of Pandamatenga to the tar on the A33 took me just short of 7 hours and I was traveling solo. The same stretch this time around, on the 1st & 2nd April took us 16.5 hours, with the last 50km taking just under 9 hours. On this trip we were 2 vehicles, one with a trailer.

    Two of the pans that had water in Jan were 2-3 times longer and substantially deeper on this trip.

    All in all it was a great couple of days, the sense of humour began to falter slightly when we were doing yet another recovery, but this time in the dark, all to the song of a fairly large male lion, who was way too close for comfort!

    The first pic was 400m across, the second pic was just short of 1000m across. Many 1000's of steps were done, liters of sweat lost, some blood too, and lest we forget the damn tick bites. In the last pic I had a 60m winch rope attached to the back of my vehicle, and onto the front of my mates vehicle. I would then winch my vehicle as well as him and his trailer a few meters forward at a time, this mud patch took us over an hour to get through in this fashion.

    Oh yuh. I remember a group getting badly stuck there (Hunters Road) and calling for a specialised recovery vehicle from Johannesburg to be sent up.

    What winch were you running as a matter of interest and what battery capacity to run the winch?

    Experience and know-how goes a long way in situations like this, I was fully prepared and well aware of the current situation up there before we left home. As a matter of interest when I did the road in Jan there was a group of Saffers I met along the way, they had been battling for 3 days when I passed them in the opposite direction.

    I have the Runva 12 000lbs winch with synthetic rope which runs off my cranking battery.

    Does not look like it got deep enough to cause damage. Doubt it even got water in the cab. The ocean moves vehicles and turns them over when it hardly reaches door handle height. That Patrol doea not even look like it moved through the ordeal from where it got stuck.

    I may be totally wrong, but to me that car is still ok after a service to brakes and a good clean up under the chassis to remove salt residue. Maybe Barto can shed some more light on the circumstances.

    As seen on the picture where the guys are walking up the dune , they tried to drive through the high tide on the shoulder( with water making spectacular waves ala Dakar race of course), between the water against the dune and the waves............ and promptly got stuck . Luckily the water did not get higher and yes, did not reach doors. With low tide it was a simple grawe en trek recovery........

    Sal moet Afrikaans skryf.... Die manne wat die see en kus ry ken, ry wanneer dit hoogwater raak, nader aan die see, want gewoonlik nader aan die duin maak dit 'n dieper sloep. Moeilik om te verstaan, maar soms is nader aan die see, vlakker.
    Glo my seewater is nie 'n ryding se vriend nie, dit is nie skade wat ongedaan gemaak kan word deur die ryding af te spuit nie.
