    Kalahari, firstly welcome!!!

Most ABS systems is on "fulltime" systems check. Even when you are not applying brakes. On your sideshaft is a little geared wheel that triggers a sensor which in turn sends a binary signal to the control unit. When one wheel turns, the control unit expects signals from the other wheels as well. If it doesn't get it, it reports a fault, and disables your ABS. Some systems only disables the affected wheel, and some the whole system. I don't know which system is used on your vehicle.

The above scenario happens when you've got one wheel stuck and not turning, and the other is spinning. The ABS system will have a time delay allowing for some spinning, but as soon as you exceed that, it will report a fault. This can usually be reset by switching the vehicle off (as in take the key out), wait for 10 seconds and start it again. The restart triggers a new systems check and resets the ABS.

I seriously doubt that that could have caused your front wheels to loose drive. Best is to ask the agents to explain how that could have happened.

I still say give me the old kort kierie and manual hubs. All these bloody electronic systems and my idea of offroading don't enjoy each other's company.

    Default First stuck

    Thanks Sakkie

It does seem as though something more sinister has happened to my vehicle. It seems that I still do not have any 4WD it has been booked into the agents today, we will wait and see.

Keep us posted. And ask the agents what you can do if this happens to you when you're 400km away from the nearest help. It might come in handy one day.

    Ja wel,

    My turn was Saturday.

Went to a wedding in Welkom. Now I do believe all would agree with my thought process: Drive on tar to Welkom, attend wedding, drive back on tar. No recovery equipment necesary!

Slight judgement error on my behalf. When we got the the church service, it was raining, like the big flood. Drove to the door, dropped SWAMBO, like a perfect gentleman, and went to park the 'lux. As I went off the pavement, I felt the grass was a bit soft but didn't give it any thought. Neither did 12 other drivers.

After the service, the fun started!

Jumped in the 'lux, engaged R and.....went nowhere. Got out and yep, no grip, wheels just spinning. Difflock, no difference.

An X5 got out easily and vanised into thin air(what else do you expect?). So did the Outlander and a Subaru.

There we where, Merc's, Audi, a few 'luxes, Izoos, Ranger, etc all just spinning away.

Pushed the Ranger out. I only had a thin nylon rope with me, so we made it a tripple. One by one we pulled/pushed the vehicles out. Snapped the rope a few times, but hey, we all got out and had a great laugh with a few drinks later!

Standard centre diff lock was engaged, but got horribly cross axelled to such an extent that one wheel on each axel lost all traction.
