Default Winch hook, rated bow shackle or soft shackle?

    Hi all.

I recently got a 4ton winch (almost for free) and decided to refresh it a bit and fit it to the Hilux in preparation for our upcoming Mozambique adventure in Dec/Jan...

I cleaned, re-greased and repainted the winch and opted to replace the frayed wire rope with 10mm super 12 dyneema.

The rope I ordered from Ropes for Africa and it was delivered to my door with the end spliced and included a cover, soft shackle as well as a nylon tow rope. Fast friendly and efficient service.

Now what do you guys suggest I use for the business end... winch hook ( that came with the wire rope) rated bow shackle or soft shackle?

I utilized a soft shackle for the first time on a recent trip to Namib desert. Many recoveries each day. What a pleasure it was. The ease of hooking up and itís so light. Also very ďsafeĒ if something letís go. Easy to pack as well. The shackle is no worse off after it being used aprox 20 times. Hope this helps

I suppose each has its own set of pros and cons in a given scenario.

How does one store the rope with soft shackle when not in use? Does one just loop it through the bow shackle or recovery point and take up the slack on the winch rope?

I would fit a thimble in the rope loop before attaching a shackle or soft shackle.

A thimble as in one of those steel braces on the inside of the loop? (Ok, google answered me)Would this be to deter wear from chafing?

Keep mine together with kinetic ropes in one of these 40 litre translucent plastic crates - normally inside the vehicle - but on trips on roof rack but with cover to protect from sun.

    Nice video here:

I requested a thimble from the rope supplier, their responce was that the edges or end points of the thimble can cut the rope. Although some suppliers sell the rope with thimbles attached...

You also get these type of safety thimbles , but I have not seen one advertized locally.

Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

Bow shackles scare me, I think they are one of the strongest components in a pull or snatch therefore, this means that some other component will go first leaving the shackle to become a missile.

I will stick with the soft ones thank you. I have used them on both ends. As shown to connect tow rope, and to connect the recovery points on the vehicle being pulled, to a snatch strap connected to my tow bar (via my pin, not the ball)

I see Stranger have a thimble inside the eye of his winch rope. That is the type I were referring to.

I see, I'll visit some hardware stores to see if I can find one. Thanks.

How do you store the winch line when not in use?

Just attach the shackle to a recovery point and take up the slack with the winch? (As in the picture)Click image for larger version.

Attach a bow shackle to the recovery point. That recovery point will chafe through your soft shackle.

Mine has a protective sleeve on that prevents that. See pic one, shows it clearly.

Thanks and well spotted, mine came with the Dyneema rope winch already built in.

There are some good youtube vids on how to splice one onto the Dyneema

Have to admit I have a fair bit of confidence with mine, having used it a couple of times in real life.

(as opposed to practising in my garden)

If you are replacing wire with Dyneema on the drum, then I would say NO. You would need the rollers for wire but I think the rope will work with either.

Yes I bought a Hawse Fairlead to replace the roller.
As per pic 1 of Stranger.
The risk is that the rollers will pinch and damage the rope.
Get a hawse... basically a smooth machined piece of aluminium.

I got 30meters of 10mm dyneema. Just a couple of Ronts less than R1400...

Still need to see if all of it will fit as it is a bit thicker than the 8.5mm wire rope that came off the drum.
