As far as I can remember the only reception was by Twee Revieren because as we got close to it coming back from Nossob +-5km the cellphone messages started coming through.

Nope, reception at Twee Rivieren, none in the rest of the park. You can buy WiFi access at Nossob and Mata Mata camps though

Although there is no normal cel reception in the park (besides 2R), although you can purchase a Wi-fi data voucher at Mata Mata and Nossob, these work sometimes. And only if they have available (they do run out of vouchers) so never bank on relying on these. Satphone for calling home works best.
In case of REAL emergencies, the office will still assist.

350MB WIFI for R75 per device at Nossob with only signal at the reception
350MB WIFI for R75 per device at Mata Mata with strong signal in camp.
Mata Mata has strong MTC Namibia signal if your phone can do roaming.
TR south africa signal works well

The Wi-Fi works well but is over unsecured servers.
At Nossob sit on the bench outside the office. Good reception there.

Thanks. Friend has a sat phone with sms capabilities that I can borrow. Just need to check in with MIL and our doggie at home. Both are not 100% well. We are going to mabuasehube after nossob and there certainly won't be cell reception.

At Mata Mata one can walk across to the Namibian border post and buy a SIM card there. This I bought from one of the officials there who obviously does this as a sideline.
The SIM cost R30. From MTC the SIM is R7 so I guess the R 23 is his profit margin. He then loaded R35 worth of airtime and thereafter converted it to an Aweh Gig package which gives you 100 minutes local calls (Could not phone South African numbers) 700 texts and 1 gig data. There was an additional 500Meg for WhatsApp. Not bad for R35. This package only lasts a week.

This was adequate to stay in touch with the family

TR south africa signal works well
    This.
At Nossob it was a frustration. I got some for my dad but it was so hard to get decent signal, even for Whatsapp.
    TR I had great signal.
Mata Mata has good MTC roaming.

I had switched my phone off though. None of this cellphone nonsense whilst I am there, thank you.

(Yes, I do understand that you may have family or other commitments you need to check in with)

Cell phone for Roberts bird ID, SAT phone for comms. We buy about R1000 worth of airtime, not sure off hand how much but enough for peice of mind re: dogs and any other important matter. My business is a 24/7 story I cannot shut the door and disappear.

San parks wi-fi worked for us. I carry a satphone but only for emergencies. $100 for 30 minutes is expensive.
