    Default Namibia Road Updates

    Hi Guys

As you know in the rainy season our road conditions change quite a bit. As I get updates from around the country I will post.

    10 Feb 2011

    • C14 UPDATE (Namib - Gaub Pass between Walvis Bay & Solitaire)
The Gaub River is running and the Gaub Pass is closed. Please take the C14 from Walvis Bay over the Kuiseb Pass and turn onto the C26 towards Windhoek. Drive over the Gamsberg Pass and turn right into the D1265. Then take the D1261 to Nauchas. If the traveller has a 4x4 take the Spreetshoogte Pass, otherwise continue on the D1265 to the C24. Turn towards Windhoek into the C24 and take the MR47 to the C14. Take the C14 to Solitaire.
    • D3700 UPDATE (North - Between Ruacana & Kunene River Lodge)
The road still has a lot of areas with deep water and although there are detours, these are in a very bad condition. A 4x4 with an experienced driver is required. It is advisable to drive to Kunene River Lodge on the C43 from Opuwo.
    • C13 (South - Between Helmeringhausen & Aus)
The road is in a poor condition. A 4x4 is recommended. Please drive slowly.
    • C13 (South - Between Rosh Pinah & Aus)
The C13 between Aus and Rosh Pinah is in very good condition.
    • C13 (South - Between Rosh Pinah & Noordoewer)
The C13 between Rosh Pinah and Noordoewer is closed due to severe damage.
Also apparently no access to Sossusvlei the last 2 days.

    Not Much new.

The D2351 and and D2403, between Khorixas and Omaruru so to say, are all only 4x4 at the moment, as is the C39 direction Palmwag, and the Aba-huab river crossings at twyfelfontein. The C40 for by Grootberg Pass are also better with 4x4 as the roads are wet and slippery.

Default Road conditions in rainy Northern Namibia !

My 2 cents worth. Just returned today after 3 weeks in Koakoland. Some of my info is therefore 2 to 3 weeks old. It is starting to rain heavily in the centre of this region, but as yet minimal rain in North-western Namibia. Due to change any day now.
Travelling in this area now should only be done in a well-equiped 4x4 as conditions are worsening and lots of rain is expected.

    1) Ruacana to Kunene River Lodge.
Kunene is flowing strongly but no gross flooding as of 3 weeks ago. The Angolans have opened the dam floodgates early to prevent the sudden floods of a couple of years ago. We took this route along the river, 5 water crossings in all, most of them short, deepest at knee level. Firm stony bottem to ride on. Also about 5 "detours" around deeper crossings, fairly hairy up steep slopes of boulders with some scary sideslopes but in a suitable vehicle- no problems.

    2) Kunene River Lodge to Epupa Falls
We were advised by Pete Morgan owner of K. R. Lodge that the route along the river probably not passable now. He is very clued-up and if you phone him at the lodge he will gladly supply the latest info. We took the inland route, no problems.

    3) Very little rain in North-western Koakoland up to 2 weeks ago but may have changed. If you get stuck, there are very few other travellers in this area at this time. The river routes around Puros and Sesfontein were fine last week. The rivers are flooding but subside overnight. There is lots of rain in Damaraland. We managed the river routes down the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers only getting stuck once, entirely my own fault. The Huab river is having lots of flash floods but by the next day has dried completely. Fortunately these river beds are of coarse sand with very little mud so crossing is not a problem if the water depth is safe.

    4) The B3 road to the Ariamsvlei/ Nakop border post is now open again after parts of the tar road were washed away last week. There are dirt road detours around the few areas where the road was destroyed. With further rain expected I am sure it will be closed from time to time. It is going to take some months to repair this road.

Please do not allow any of the above to deterr any planned visit, seeing this beautiful country dressed in green is a wonderful sight. Just be flexible and careful and seek up to date local knowledge along the way.

    Stan.

Apparently all roads etc in the south open again for the moment, certain passes only 4x4 though. Will post if anything changes.

    Hi there.
We are planning a trip to Damaraland in middle March. We are planning to travel through Mata-Mata, Gochas, Stampriet and onto the mainroad at Hardap. Does anyone know the road conditions of these roads?

for the time of year it always difficult to give exact road conditions as they could be bad, they get fixed and all is well, it rains and it back to bad. The roads change overnight in the rainy season.
