We are travelling from Walvis Bay to Jo'berg on wednesday and have been told that the Karsberg to Uppington route is ok again otherwise it meant a 4 hour detour via Springbok.

I've just returned from the farm. The gravel road from Walvis to Maltahohe is in great shape. No nasty surprises. The gaub pass is as good as it's ever been.

Rivers flowing all along the route, long waving grass, hundreds of oryx & springbuck.....man, it looks good after the rains!!

Waters on the rivers in Namibia's north-eastern areas are rising, as is usual for this time of year. A number of lodges on Tour Brief are located in the area, and report that they are continuing with business as usual.

The individual lodge statuses are as follows:

    • Namushasha Country Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal. Follow the clearly marked detour signs.
    • Ndhovu Safari Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal, but is offering free seasonal boat transfers from the parking area to the lodge. The campsite is closed.
    • Ntwala Island Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal.

4X4 offroad travel and activities that require 4X4 vehicles may be cancelled by lodges in the region. Guests should be advised to stick to the main highway and other well-travelled routes. Road conditions should be established by asking at reception on departure, or by calling the destination ahead.

Also just spoke to a tour guide friend who says all roads are open again except one or two to Spitzkoppe.

we just came back from Namibia. We drove the day after the terrible rain in Swakopmund from Swakopmund to cape cross and the C34 was ok again. Some more info:
    - C13 between Ausenkehr and Rosh Pinah was still closed
    - The D1930 between Uis and Usakos via Spitzkoppe was closed (we took the D 2306 via Erongo mountains)
    - If you drive from Uis to Khorixas, take the C35 (the Ugab made it impossible to follow the D-2319)
    - If you stay in Vingerklip lodge it is best to avoid the first route if you come from Khorixas. Stay on the tar road and take the second route (unless you drive 4X4 and want to cross some water pools where some locals got stuck when we passed there)

Open as from the easter weekend - road is a little rough in places due to wash away.

Photo of the low level bridge across the fish river being repaired on this last Monday (Rosh Pinah - Noordoewer).

Jip, those two sections has boards "indicating closed".

BUT, it is perfectly passable for 4x4's and bikes. Some of the ridges might be a problem for cars, and most cars wont cope well with the long sections of sand.

Regarding "road closed" signs, if you guys come across these in windhoek or any town for that matter, even though your 4x4 will probably make the little water crossing or whatever obstacle causes the sign to be there with ease, rather heed the sign. If you don't obey and get caught by a friendly traffic officer, it could cost you around N$2000.00

Default Ruacana to Kunene River Lodge

We (5 vehicles with 4 trailers) drove the road(?) from Ruacana to Kunene River Lodge on 30th April - it took us 10 hours - flooded in many places with deep mud - the local children know the uncharted drive rounds and led/followed us for the best part of 15km in return for Tshirts, apples flour and sugar.

Not recommended (unless you are looking for an adventurous trail like us) - we had to recover each vehicle once and one detour around 1.2km of flooded road took us 1.5hrs ro complete.

THANKS Walter, your updates are very useful. Appreciate you taking the time to do this.

Hopefully the 4x4 road to Sosussvlei from the parking will be open soon again, we have booked to take parents & in-laws there at end May!

    Default More road updates

Opuwo Country Hotel reports that the C43 between Sesfontein and Opuwo is closed to 2X4s and buses. Use the C35 from Kamanjab as an alternative.

SO, seems like time to get this thread going again

Was watching the rain over gamsberg pass and spreetshoogte pass this afternoon, looked quite heavy. And with most of the rivers still wet from the last seasons heavy rains, it won't take much to get them flowing.

But it's really nice not having to water your garden. Went from watering 8 hrs per day to rain every now and then.

    Access road to Ndhovo Lodge
Guests with 2x4 should stop in the parking area from here they will be transported to the lodge by boat.
Guests with 4X4s can use the road leading to Ngepi, and turn right just before the Ngepi gate. This road will take them to Ndhovu.
