    Default Brakhah site problem

    Dirk,

Don't know if there's a problem with Brakhah's site, it tells me access is forbidden. Anybody else having any luck?
So, do you limit yourself to logic? And what about the beauties and glories of the unexplained?

Default Rhino Trailer not part of Rhino Linings

    Hi Dirk
I notice that Rhino Trailers are linked to Rhino Linings on your list. Frik is however independant and not linked to Rhino Linings.
As far as I know, they dont have a web site up, but a contact number I have: 012 542 2237
He builds trailers on order only - and they are the toughest I'v yet come across during all my excursions through Africa.

    Default Trailer manufacturers

Hi Guys, I know of two more in the Cape Town vacinity:

Griffon Trailers are manufactured by Zandberg Engineering in Blackheath. Call Johan Zandberg on 021 905 3343. I see many trailers, and these arevery neat. Fully stainless trailer with five access doors for around R35000.

Rigid Trailers are manufactured by Morne le Roux. 083 357 5330. He competes in the aluminium trailer market

And if anyone is looking for a trailer tent or rooftop tent, or needs some advice on these, speak to me.

Cuts in Pinetown also build a decent trailer with a Robex (spelling?) suspension. Don't think they build customised trailers though.

    Jan,
I will take up your offer on trailer/rooftop tent advice. Please share your experience as I am currently investigating this option. Getting tired of the 4-man dome tent on the ground and is considering either a rooftop or a "bos-trailer"
I am not an "xtreme" 4x4 fan, rather the average 4x4er who can not afford to damage my vehicle, a Fortuner 3.0D-4D. Would appreciate your response.
    Regards,
    Herman Kern.

Trailers should be classified as offroad, tourer or camper, the tourer a sort of compromise between the two.

So your first decision needs to be: What am I going to do with it?

The off roader is for those who want to really rough it, they go looking for challenging terrain, even though they are jus exploring new terrain. This kind of trailer (if they are brave enough to take a trailer) has to be short and light, probably with an ordinary rooftop tent on it, for ease of operation and reduced weight.

The camper, as the other pole, is normallya larger trailer, well equiped, and with an extensive tent on it. The Infanta jumps to mind, with our Serengeti Maxi and optional side walls around the kitchen. If you want to keep your wife and kids happy for a 14 day holiday it must be comfortable. If it takes an hour or two to pitch, so what, you'll be staying there for long enough.

The tourer would be for those of us who like to explore the Nam's, Bot's and Zam's, where we are likely to encounter an obsticle or two, and the roads are poor, but in general we don't go look for trouble. (It seems to me you may fit in here.) You probably sleep over between one and two nights at a spot, so pitching must not be too much of a shlep.

I would suggest a shortie trailer, and as light as possible. Traveling 2500 km to get to Zambia can become very long if you can't manage 110/120 kph comfortably.

And I would suggest an easy pitch tent, either a family rooftop or a touring trailer tent that you can get up in 10 or 15 minutes max.

Remember, life happens and bad weather happens. Get a tent that could also withstand strong winds and thunder storms. Many tents have floppy side awnings. Wind causes havoc to those. Make sure they can be pulled tight. Also remember that canvas is like thatched roofs: they need slope to be water tight. Don't expect a flat awning to keep water out!
Hope to have shed some light.

As ek moes kies sal ek sonder enige aarseling die Conqueror Conquest vat.
