Default Shipping Containers & Squatters (No, we're not shipping them out)

    Hi Everybody

A friend of mine works with elderly people in one of the big squatter camps. I've never had much time for squatters, but the way he spoke about the other day made me realize that they're people as well. The organization that he is working with is trying to make their last years on earth just a little bit better.

To make a long story short, they want to get hold of a couple of shipping containers and put certain facilities inside them. I'm not sure what the exact purpose of the containers will be, but I assume that it will be things like kitchens and so on. A container will also be easy to move if the squatters eventually move (here's hoping).
According to him, a container costs around R190 000. At the moment, they have R100 000 at their disposal.

Does someone perhaps have an idea where they'll be able to find containers at a more affordable rate? I'm sure that they won't mind it the containers are used or dented or rusted or whatever else. I think any alternatives will also be worth considering.

    Thanks everyone.

    Regards
    RF Nel

Try Safmarine or Maersk, I worked for them until last year (Safmarine is owned by Maersk) and they sometimes published their kind deeds in their company magazine, including donating containers to needy causes. I did not work for the container division, so I do not know much about their operation.

I hope you come right with this!

well, I had one, but it got stolen !!!

190k is for a new one, one that has failed seaworthiness is about 12 to 14k, plus delivery usually. While they are not seaworthy for whatever reason for other purposes they are perfect, so don't worry about the 'derating' or whatever...

    Hi Guys

Thank you for the excellent feedback so far. I've passed everything that you've said on to him. As always, the 4x4 Community did not fail to deliver!
