    Question Two Problems

    1. I have a 1999 Kia Sportage Auto with 173k km on the clock and have recently came across a little problem. On long trips, +300km, (highways, country whatever) the Sporty starts to overheat. The rad fan runs when the car is in Park and should therefore be running when I'm driving. I've also checked the coolant - no problem there. Could this be a leaky head gasket or maybe a thermostat problem? I love the little vehicle and it is in daily use - to work in CPT and to the West Coast on weekends. Any ideas?

    2. I recently came across a 2001 Freelander 2.5V6 Auto with 102k km on the clock. The vehicle is in showroom condition. How does this Landie compare to my Sporty and what is the problems I should be looking for if I tempted to buy?

4x4? 'Cos the earth ain't flat.

    Service that cooling system.

    Service the rad.
    Replace the cap.
    Replace the thermostat.

Can't help on the Kia, but re the Freelander, be afraid, be very afraid. Don't touch anything pre 2004 or thereabouts facelift model, and the petrol FLs had some serious design flaws. Post the same question in the Land Rover section under the heading "2001 Freelander: to buy or not to buy?" and you'll get some vehement responses. We have the 2005 FL1 2 litre TD4 (BMW engine) and it's very sweet, but I wouldn't touch the petrol.

Agree with Tony Weaver, if you want a Freelander 1 there are only one option and that is the TD4.

Thanks for the advice - took the radiator for a compression test and the cap was busted. New cap, flushed and new coolant. Done and dusted.
    Thanks!

...and I'll steer clear of the petrol Freelander's.
