Mbombela - The Kruger National Park has started using brand-new cameras to trap speeding motorists that pose a danger to fellow visitors and animals.

The hi-tech cameras can record the speed of several oncoming cars simultaneously and also take live video footage, which the park's traffic officers can replay to motorists querying the speeds at which they were caught travelling.

“Our law enforcers have experienced many problems when issuing fines to guilty individuals who contested their fines and demanded proof. This new equipment will solve that,” said park spokesperson William Mabasa.

The speed limit in the park is 50km/h on tar roads and 40km/h on gravel.

Mabasa said traffic officers would conduct roadblocks in "strategic places" all over the park from December 10, while law enforcement would be highly visible in vulnerable areas such as receptions and at banks or ATMs in rest camps.

“There will also be strict spot-checks at the entrance gates, with emphasis on adherence to permit requirements. Security personnel have also been tasked to be on the lookout for suspicious persons and vehicles during this busy period,” said Mabasa.

In December and January, the park's gates will be open between 05:30 and 18:30, and latecomers may be subject to a fine of up to R1 500, said Mabasa.
