Haha, Andrew.......I was waiting and you are first! Flack is fine. Just a pity the flack did not result in the recovery. This happened on the track above the beach.

Please keep one idea in mind...........you do not argue with the only person available to assist you. If he knows better and the ball will in all probability goes in his direction if it snaps, then he knows better. With the knowledge from this forum, as to what can happen, it was decision time. Abandon and wait for a week or attempt recovery with what is available, as safe as possible

Then you also look at what is available. Rather use the old frayed strap that will hopefully give way before the ball, than any of the new straps. Also no snatch or jerking but ten abled bodies to push were available.

This was also the second party that came to the recovery. The first got bogged down 200m from where we got stuck and in attempt to free himself, damaged his own vehicle's drivetrain. The eventual recovery was done only after the second vehicle got stuck across my tracks and had to be assisted by 11 people, to turn it around.

It was also discovered that this VW did not have the recovery hook connection as the earlier model had on the rear. The supplied hook can only be used in front on this model.

It is generally called a "learning curve". My mistake was to drop the speed and momentum when I started to appreciate the view and surroundings. This knowledge and experience came in handy when we did Sodwana beach in April this year. The vehicle can do it and be sure to know your vehicle's and your own limitations and capabilities.

We will be visiting Kagga Kamma in December and I believe there are a couple of sandy patches to try......

Viscous coupling in the centre, which works pretty quick....turn a tight circle on tar too quickly and you can feel it working. The Diff ratio is higher than the 2wd version for extra bit of grunt in gears 1 to 4, with 5th taller than the 2wd.

    Engine wise....well....it's only got 44kW

It's horribly bad off-road, but good fun, puts a smile on my face and gives me about 12km/l

Only mod I will be doing is a set of rally tyres on steel rims for gravel roads and the bit of off-roading I will do with.

Either a panda or a jimny is on my wishlist for small 4x4 gravel car. Seen one while back in AD, did well, but he did loose his aircon radiator in frontal with dune

    Default Cederberg/N.Cape and S.Moz, Jan/May'13

Some old pics from earlier trips, sorry about the bad quality!

In Jan we took the West Coast - Cederberg - N Cape route back to Jhb, ended up alone in the mountains. Unfortunately don't have pics of our river crossing, which had a sand bottom with a sandy climb out the other side. Water was 400-500mm deep, not recommended for a Forester...
Then we made a turn on Verneukpan. Epic place!

Moz pics are near Ponta Mamoli in the South - beautiful scenery and the Foz handled the sandy climbs just fine!
