Which model? W163 or W164? I believe the last W163's were available in 320CDI

On the W164 try and get one with the Off Road Pack, better ground clearance, Low range, Centre and Rear Difflocks.

O.K that's W164, much better build quality than the W163. ALso they had a refreshment of the range in the last half of 2007. You should be able to get a 320CDi at a good price as the 350Cdi superceded it in late 2009.

I must add although the 320CDi is a proven and very good engine the 350CDi is in another league wrt power and torque.

first response re: x5 - u gotta drive em to understand. on road the dynamics in the x5 just superior. i also really wanted a new ml, but drove all the contenders, and the x5 is the king of road, performance wise / dynamics etc. the ml has outstanding quality though.

the 320cdi and 350cdi engines have the same outputs. there have been a few tweaks to bring in line with blue effieciency labels / international standardisation.

    Willie

Maak seker dit het offroad-package voordat jy enige model koop, kan nie later bygevoeg word nie.

As petrol wil koop, gaan vir ML500.

In die sentrale konsole sal die volgende voorkom:
    -LR (low range)

ML320CDI standaard 17" rims tensy anders bestel.

Ek sal 17" aanbeveel weens hul beter afblaasbaarheid, AT bande beskikbaar in standaard grootte( 235/65R17).

Kan ook groter gaan bv 265/65R17 en deel dan band grootte met Fortuner, Pajero wat beskikbaarheid daarvan verbeter.

The 350 V6 is a really good engine with no issues. Don't know how thirsty they are in the ML but in the SLK it's astonishingly good on fuel. I can really hammer the SLK and still get 8-9L/ 100KM. Once on a trip to Durban at 140KM/H on speedo cruise down plus a weeks worth of pottering around Scottburgh I got 1060KM on 65Lt or 16.3KM/L no B.S.

    The 500 is quite thirsty.

In town and stop start traffic you can expect between 18 and 20L/ 100KM depending on how much fun you have.

On the open road I have achieved a best of 11.9L/ 100KM doing a steady genuine(GPS) 110KM/H fully loaded with luggage. Mostly though I get between 12.5 and 13.2L/100KM as I usually set the cruise control to a genuine 130KM/H. This in itself is not bad when you consider my vehicle has a 5.5L V8 engine.

As Chris said, you get different wheel options. I cannot fit anything smaller than 19" wheels on mine due to the enormous disc brakes. I can however fit MT tires as Goodyear MTR is available in the correct size. Do find out what a set of tyres will cost you for the vehicle you choose. I have just replaced the tyres on mine and prices varied between R2 600.00 and R5 999.00 per tyre(Brand names with correct ratings).

The 350 petrol and the Diesels have smaller brake discs allowing you to fit the 17" wheels and accordingly tyres will cost less.

Diesel and 350 petrol may be ordered with Air suspension, it isn't standard. All South African models have 4WD(4Matic) and are automatic AFAIK. All ML models(Except the ML63 AMG) can be ordered with Off Road Package.

All ML500's have adjustable air suspension(Airmatic), offroad programme(4ETS) and Downhill Speed Regulation(DSR) installed. The ones with Off Road Package have additional buttons for LR and a twist knob for the Diff Locks. Mine is standard but still quite capable as 1st and 2nd gears are extremely low and the engine produces 285KW and 530NM of torque. The addition of LR and Difflocks coupled with 4ETS makes the vehicle close to unstoppable and capable of climbing a 100% gradient.
