its actually R160k less than a freelander .... you have to compare to the hse fl2 model
seeing that i comes full house with heated leather seats etc..

it has low range and traction control so you probably dont need lockers
i think the only problem is ground clearance, but give it a lift and i think youre going to have a very nice jeep

"The Freedom Drive II-equipped Patriot uses a continuously variable transmission with a low range instead of a traditional two-speed transfer case, but has Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging, signifying that it "has been designed to perform in five categories of off-road conditions: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation, and water fording." The Freedom Drive II Patriot is among the most offroad-capable vehicles in its class, thanks in part to the presence of the off-road Brake Traction Control which is also available in Freedom Drive I options. This allows the vehicle to maintain forward motion if one or two wheels lose traction by selectively applying brakes to the spinning wheels. This is a major improvement over a conventional AWD system; a vehicle intended for onroad use with open differentials only would be stranded if there is a loss of traction in one front and one rear wheel at the same time"

That is the problem that i have with my Jimny, If one wheel is in the air i lose traction, Cross Axle inclines are a bit tough for a jimy, you must choose ur lines carefully.the jeep would make it a bit easier..

Keep in mind that test is on the upgraded off road model...as far as I know we don't get that here.

SA 4x4 did a test of the local one and were less than complementary.

Fourwheeler.com had one as a long term loan car - http://www.fourwheeler.com/roadtests...iew/index.html

And there is a Mopar 2011 Extreme concept that IS awesome - google it.

    But from my experience...

Second hand LR2 TD4 Auto all the way...

Your Jimny can get to places that a Patriot can't even dream of.

We don't get the Freedom-Drive II equipped trail-rated model here.
Which makes the Patriot no more capable than your average SUV e.g. Hyundai Tuscon, Nissan X-Trail etc., but with less ground clearance.

    Hi,

You cant even use the words Patriot (local) and FL2 in the same sentence.

In almost every measurable parameter, right from build quality to on road and off road abilities there just is no comparison.

Thats why one of them costs R160K more.

Not anti Jeep, those that know me will know that I am a closet Jeep fan, but the Patriot naaaww.

    Cheers

must admit thats how i felt about it when i first saw it.... until i read that article... but yes if you cant get the trail rated one here then that article is not worth much

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Patriot

This statement holds true for the Patriot in Africa as well:
All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System which tuned differently from the USA versions but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and tranction control settings for on or off-road use.

    Hi,

All the above. I (we) own a FL2 and a friend owns a Patriot.

As I said, I love Jeeps. Would I own a Wrangler YES, would I like a modded Commander, BIG BIG YES. Hell I even really admire Grand Cherokeess (plural spelling ? ). Dont know the Jeep codes

No point in getting into a mud slinging match here.

Awesome! Very . Nice to see, whatever the brand. Makes me want to head for the hills and I haven't done much work today anway. Sighhhhh! Pity that spec's not coming to SA. Would be great to see a real world test with some likely competitors such as the Freelander 2, a Subaru, a Suzuki and an Avis Polo. Could very well start another p***ing contest! Until that spec makes it to SA there's no real point in any comparison (especially as that Patriot has low-range).
