    Default From Khwai to Chobe

    Dear All,

We will be travelling through Botswana in October and thanks to all the information on this forum the route is now really taking shape!

The plan is pretty much sorted, but there is one stretch, from Khwai to Chobe that I would like to do differently. We have now planned to go south from Khwai to Maun and through to Gweta, spend the night there. Next morning from Gweta to Kasane. Obviously this will be two long days of driving and i was wondering whether it would be an option to drive through Savuti. Camping in no longer available in Savuti so we need to get through in one day... Is that possible? Can we bush camp somewhere along that route should it be necessary? We have booking at Ihaha campsite for the night but not sure if it is feasible to drive all the way up in one day?

    Thanks again for any advise!

    Hi Noortje,
Not sure how will be the water level in October…
Taking the new transit road after North Gate rather than wandering near the river as we did, it's maybe feasible to drive from North Gate to Ihaha in one long day.
If it is not, you have a quite good spot for bush camping after Gcotha Gate. You take the cut line left heading Linyanti and you turn the 1st track right to Kachikau. At the corner there is a waterhole where we stopped for lunch, a nice place for camping.

I agree with Pierre, bush camp is definately an option and this location I also recommended for the same purpose earlier. (If you use it stay clear from the water hole by at least 50-100 meters, not to disturb the visitors, they will leave you alone then as well).

    One other suggestions:
Book that night in Linyanti (also SKL) but show up in savute in the later afternoon.
They will be able to accommodate you for just one night and the camping fees are already paid.
Alternatively, proceed to Linyanti, much better than the long drive on tar.

Thanks again for the advise, we'll go for this option then and hope the thirsty visitors dont mind us staying at their drinking spot!

    Default book park entrance?

One more question; if we do the wild camping just outside of Savuti, do i need to book and pay park entrance for the next day, how does that work?

Route will be as follows now:
3rd bridge campsite overnight, next day drive to Kwhai.
Overnight at khwai community campsite, next day drive into savuti
Wild camp at Gcotcha gate, next day though savuti to Ihaha.

Can i book park entrance if i dont spend the night in the park?

    Thanks again!

Yes, unfortunately you have to pay day visitors fees as you are passing the day through the park (from Khwai to Ghoha). Note, Ghoha is past Savuti camp on the northern gate.
Then next day you spend in Chobe Ihaha, enter either in Ngoma or Sedudu gate.

    Thanks KS,

We will be in Moremi for 2 nights, then Khwai 2 nights, then camp at Ghoha gate 1 night and then ihaha 2 nights, so away for 6 nights inside the parks. Will we be able to stock up on supply anywhere during this route? Will we be ok for fuel etc? not sure if there are any shops to stock up in Khwai or anywhere else?

You have to get your supplies from Maun, in Khwai you possibly stick to cold drinks and sugar etc, but that's it.
For fuel you have to budget around 800 kms worth of it, although it is "only" about 600 kms, count for game drives and slow drive in low gear and in sand.
Maun, then next is Kasane. If you are short of anything when hitting Ngoma, take the tar road through Chobe and visit Kasane for supplies, then enter at Sedudu gate.
