Default Kosi bay to Shelley Beach

Hi guy's. I'm planning a two week coastel trip from JHB to Kosi bay to Shelley beach in January 2007. The route which I'll be travelling will be Jhb to Bethal to Ermelo to Piet Retief to Ubombo to Kosi bay.

After 2/3 days at Kosi bay I'll go to Sodwana. I'll stay there for 1/2 days and then back to Ubombo to Bayala to Mtubatuba to St. Lucia.

After 2/3 days at St. Lucia I'll go back to Mtubatuba to Mtunzini to Salt Rock.

After 2/3 days at Salt rock I'll go to DBN to Shelly beach, where I'll stay untill I go back to JHB.

Is this route advisable...? Any shortcuts..? Or Tricks...? Or Catches...?

Most places where I spend time will consist of camping.

Any good advise on camping spots, places of interest, deap sea fishing charters, Nice pubs..... , etc will be appreciated.

    Hi

We went to Kosi Bay at end April this year. The road between Ermelo and Piet Retief is in a bad state. From Ermelo take the road to Amsterdam and from there to Piet Retief, about a 20 km detour but a beautiful and quiet road. From Jozini to Kosi Bay there are some huge potholes and many animals on the road so better take it calmly. Met 2 couples at Kosi bay with a brand new Volvo 4x4 that got water in its innards by storming through water at 1st lake and was dood soos n mossie, one could shake the water from the air filter (petrol model), anyhow they said it took them 8 hours from Pta whereas we first spent some days at Golela. Further I cannot advise as it was my first trip into KZN.

The area you want to visit is subtropical, so prepare for hot humid days , and mosquito filled nights.

Coming from north the road to Kosi Bay over Jozini is slightly shorter than going through Ubombo, and you get to cross the damwall.
In Jozini you will see traders on the pavements in front of the shops (similar to what conditions further north in Africa is, I think)

From Kosi Bay to Sodwana the road along the coast is very scenic, passing lake Sibaya on the east side.
Sodwana is very commercialised, ideal for deep sea fishing and mostly scuba diving.

About 20 km north of Sodwana is a campsite called Mabibi.
This is classed as one of the best in SA , with only 10 sites it is nice and quiet. Hot and cold water, flush toilets and no electricity.
    Tel 035 474 1504 , [email protected]

From Sodwana you dont have to go back to Ubombo.
There is a tar road going to Hluhluwe which is quite a bit shorter and faster.

For the St Lucia area you can consider camping at Cape Vidal, in a "KZN wildlife"nature reserve.(only 30 km from St Lucia)
The wild (tame ) animals walk through the campsite. Again very quiet and "rustig".Not to sure about fishing charters there, but there is lots of charters in St Lucia.

The Salt rock caravan park is stunning, with sites right on the beach close to a tidal pool.
Lucilly you'll be missing their peak season prices by a few days, dropping from R330/night for two to R170/night.
    Tel:-032 525 5025 (Trudie)
On their website you can get a layout of the park to help you choose a camp site.

Even though I stay close I havn't been to these places yet, so see what other responses you get.

    Hope this helps

One thing is that locals in the Sodwana love 4x4's (even with a buggard clutch) Watch out for a common trap where they lay a log / tree accross the road. Then they attempt to highjack you.
This practice was still warned about in the Divestyle in April. Dont think they have changed their tactics..

Dont mean to scare you off, but be aware. Stay on the real roads and dont leave your vehicle unattended whilst visiting some long forgotten beach. There are plenty of them and chances are that your car will be stripped by the time you get back. I know this is a very popular practice from Richards Bay northwards....

JohnLandy has it about right there.
I would stay at mabibi and Cape Vidal if possible as aposed to Sodwana and St Lucia. Much nicer or so i have heard.

BigRed, the hijacking and stripping of cars happens in the area immediately north of Richards Bay (40km or so), butnot as far as I know as for north as Sodwana, Kosi & St Lucia. I could be wrong though so no point in taking a chance.

Sounds like a great trip. Hope you enjoy it.

Ohh, and be aware, north of the Tugela river is a malaria area so take precautions (nets, drugs etc).

We Campe din Mabib for five days in July.. BEAUTIFUL!...Nice beach too! Check out the resident Moray Eels! Beatiful sunsets over Lake Sibaya is not to be missed...

however on the day we left, we were confronted by a vehicle blocking the road in a very awkward spot. No place to turn around - good ambush place..... My brother spotted it for what it was, I checked out the scattered little kraals, and in my opinion the people semed very nervous when we approached. We stoppe da good 100 yards away. Now we were prompted by some (apperently) locals to proceed.. This decided it and we turned around to take anothe route that we knew of....Along the way some local women thanked us for not taking that road as it was BAD.... We reported this to the guard at the gate on the way to Mbazwana, and he commented that it was again someone behaving badly. He promptly summoned the police in to fly in with a patrol.

Apparently this is the modus operandus. Bu tif you keep your eyes peeled and stay alert, you'll spot trouble before it can hit you. Yes it was scary, but nothing happened. We got to take detour that's all...

On a different note: If you have a GPS, you can download relatively detail maps of that area. This will guide you on roads you can hardly imagine! Nothing too serious, but nice traveling over an ocean of dunes.... and then sometimes surrounded by tall dune forests! Amazing place!

Do not forget Mapelane - south side of Umfolozi river mouth. Thus south of St. Lucia. Read all about in the WEGSLEEP of some while ago!

And do not look at the way I type or (misspell)

Philip se Jeep Wrangler?...... John, sal dit miskien Philip (Viljoen?) wees wat verhuis het Kanada toe uit Durban uit? As dit dieselfde een is, ek het sy CJ6 hier in Westville gekoop.

Daai duine roete. Het jy 'n GPS reference?

Sorry Sakkie!

Sorry man. Ek kan nie baie help in die opsig nie!

    Geniet die Somer!
