Default Pajero 3.5 V6, Opinions please

Hi all, im new to this great site!

I am in the market for a 4x4 and at the moment i have my sights on buying a oldish pajero. I am looking for something to play around with a bit and also to tow my boat (under 1 ton)

I am looking at spending up to around 60k or so and looking along the lines of a 3.0 or 3.5L V6. One thing i have seen though is that most of the vehicles in that price range have pretty high milage....200 000km +, so my question is, what is classed as hight milage on a 3.5 Pajero I am looking at one tomorrow that is quite cheap, but it has 300 000km on the clock, would it be advisable to buy one with such high milage??

Any input would be appreciated please! Or if anyone in the cape is selling one please let me know!

    Did you buy it?
From this forum it seems that the Pajeros are allmost bullet proof and good for as long as you look after it.
Mine has only just over 175,000 on the clock ... tappet or lifter choir but otherwise perfect.

    Default Pajero V6

    Pajero V6

The Gen 2 has very little front wheel articulation, it also has no rear diff lock and the low range is simply not low enough. Otherwise would I buy one, like a shot. I drive one and have come to live with it's shortcommings. Would I buy another one, yes, yes. The Gen 2 is cheap to maintain and gives only pleasure asking nothing (very little ) in return.
High mileage on the 3,5 motor is probably over about 300 000. If it has been looked after (like any vehicle) it will still be fine. The 3,5 had oodles more power than the 3.0 so try for a 3,5. Pricing should be around R50K to R90K depending on year and condition. You will in 95% of cases hear the tappets playing a merry tune, don't worry too much, this is normal.

So i have just taken the Pajero for a test drive and she goes really nice, she is automatic, 24 Valve 1997 model, there is however one problem that the owner has admitted to me, he says that there is something about the valve stem seals that need to be replaced as the car smokes quite a bit, he said that the guys at Mitsubishi recon they would usually do a complete engine overhaul and that could cost more than the car is worth, do you guys know about this problem and perhaps how serious it is and what i would look at paying to have it sorted out? He wants 45k for the car!

2 of my friends own Pajero's (i think both is 2006 models)...both Automatic....3.5 and 3.8...both brilliant, reliable and very comfortable rides.

I don't know how good the earlier ones are but the ones I mentioned are top notch and I doubt you'll go wrong with them.

I just received a quote from my mechanic for replacing all the pipes, gaskets and valve-stem seals for under R15000. (Parts and labour)

This would take your grand total to R60 000. The going rate for a '97 model is around R60k - R70k. At least then you know what's happening with the motor.

    My 2c worth.

Thanks Nico. May i ask what sort of milage you have opn your 3.5? The other thing that i dont like too much about this one is that it is Automatic! Think i am going to shop around a bit more!

I have a 1998 SWB 3.5 V6 and a 2000 LWB 3.5 V6 both around the 120 000km mark now. I'm super happy with mine. The LWB is a Gen 3 and is super comfortable.

I cant complain and will buy another Paj any day!

    Default Pajero 3.5 v6

    Hi Dorado
I own a 1999 Pajero 3.5 v6 SWB. Bought it with 130000 km on clock. Have it now for 4 years. Currently has 223000 km on clock. No problems! Only replaced general wear and tear- clutch,cv joints, cambelt, pulleys etc. I have to correct Dave- the 3.5V6 has rear diff lock (the 3.0 does not), unless it was different pre 1999. Great vehicle. I would go for 3.5V6, because of more power, rear diff lock. Only negative- fuel consumption(6.5km/l), very bumpy on corrigated gravel.

    Hi Dorado,
Automatic transmission is the way to drive, tiptronic is best of both worlds.
Even the older Pajero auto gearboxes were renowned, same as was fitted to the then Lexus saloons, I am told.
    Safe journey,
    Abe

Hi Team B, (Now who would be team A? ;-)
Your Pajero being bumpy on sinkpklaat can only mean you had your tires too hard or your shochs are shot.
The Paj is the champ at speed on bad gravel roads. I comfortably travel at unmentionable speed on such every day. Just go down to 1.6 bar cold and feel the difference.
    Safe journey,
    Abe.

    Agree with Abe

The Pajero's I have driven (Gen2 and Gen3) are better on corrugated gravel roads than any other vehicle I have personally driven, and that includes bakkies from a couple of marques, and several SUV's.

If I had to think, the closest would be the only Disco2 I have ever driven and a Subaru.

2nd gen Pajero, just love it. Bought it over in London after only seen 3 photos on Auto trader UK with hardly any service history.Nearly 4yrs ago now and around 30k+ km done with plenty off road and not a bother yet.

Maybe the LWB drives better. Remember I have a SWB. OME shocks, 1.8 bar.

My experience of the SWB is that the ride quality is pretty much identical. The handling is a bit more lively.
