Default Molototsi River trip 12-15 Aug Feedback

Hi All, here is my version of a lovely, never to forget trip, before I start, a big thank you once again for Andre and Gert for a most memorable trip and well organised!

We got together in Mooketsi at about 9 o'clock on Thursday, a cool morning, we left in convoy (11 cars) at approx 09h50, direction Giyani. I don't think we did 20km (on tar) when my Jeep gave up the ghost, it had the most awfull sound coming from the drivetrain somewhere (must've sounded like like the guy that drove over the matrass and it got wound 'round the prop shaft)! Visual inspection gave no indication of what it could be, I had the knuckle (2x U-joints in a steel cage with a big ball and socket in between??) on the rear prop shaft just after the xfercase changed appox 3 weeks prior the trip for R3500-00, this was my first thought that the knuckle has let up, we (My 2 sons and I) idled to Tzaneen, I located the LA Sport sport and spoke to Blaar, very helpful indeed, jacked the Jeep up on the rear and spun the wheels......no sound, jacked up the front........there it was, but it sounded like somewhere inside the xfercase! .......Damn! I got the directions to Gear-Tec (Jot this name down somewhere) whilst Blaar called the owner. When I arrived they were standing ready to jack-up the Jeep, pulled out the front prop-shaft to get a better hear of the propblem, there it was, the knuckle (similar to the rear) was shot, they immediatly took it to Drive-line (Pieter), (you can jot this company name down as well), within an hour and a half the propshaft was back with 2x replaced U-Joints in the knuckle, back in the Jeep in another hour, total cost for Gear-Tec and Drive-line...R1482-00! I could'nt believe it, in my opinion a give-away compared to the rear! My utmost gratitude and thanks to Gear-Tec and Drive-line in Tzaneen. They are highly recommended for an excellent job and outstanding service.

15H30.....The laaities (26 and 22yrs) and I hit the road, direction Molototsi River!! Do we know where to.............NO! After invetigating about 6-7 droe-lope (as no "river" or fountains crossing the road is marked), and asking directions from 4 pedestrian locals, we found a dry river with lots of fresh 4x4 tracks in the bed. We made our way down to the bed, let the tyres down for 45 seconds (No space for the compressor and guage) and took our best guess on which direction the gang took in the river bed (left or right?). Time now 16H40, sun setting, everytime we got to rocks the laaities guided me through professionaly, and we kept going, we met up with the rest of the group at approx 18h10, what a relief!

The night was exceptionally cold (for me), the next morning we set out at about 08h30, after about 2hours Fabfender almost ran into a drinking water hole dug in the river bed, braked so hard with the clutch in that the articulation of the engine and driveshaft banged the clutch rubber pipe section completly closed against the firewall (I think). Astoltz (Abrie) came to the rescue and like a surgeon with all his tools got us going in approx 1hr.

That night myself and the laaities were more organised, as we did'nt have to pitch tent in the dark, had a good nights sleep. The next day we set out at 09h00, with not much eventful happening untill Fabfender got hung-up on a rock with the Landy, it took approx an hour to carefully manouvre him off the rock without damaging the vehicle! We went ahead with about 5 other cars and found out later that Gert also stuck somewhere and had to be recovered!

We made camp the last night under a huge Wildevy boom where the Molototsi and Great Letaba river come together, what a beautiful camping spot! Some of us went playing in the river with the cars and some guys had a bath in the river, then Colt of (sorry pal I forgot your name) got bogged down to the chassis and eventually we had to winch him out with 2x JEEPS! Saturdaynight Fabfender managed to squeeze in and gain the first prize trophy for holding the Landy name high in breaking down once and having to be recovered twice!Sunday we sadly left the river at about 08h30 for the long haul home for some! Unlike the other Klein Letaba trips, all vehicles made it out as we had a fairly easy ride, I heard that Jeapfreak blew 2x tyres on the Toyota that he used to haul his Willys home with on Sunday!

I must admit. Combining a trail and a trip is always nice.

Thanks Ben, for a very good albeit very biased trip report. It really was a lekka trip, I sommer gave Andre PD cheques for the next ten years, told him just to let me know the dates.

Ben have you made any progress on that trip you planning. The Landies idling already.
