Its taken them 4 years to get to the border post with a decent dirt road. I think it might take till I've retired till they finish the tar to the top.

Default Just the opposite, actaully !!!

If you read that article closely, you will see its says that the South African Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi said: " ...The upgrading has been completed on the South African side...."

Well, I live in Himeville and trust me, they're not even anywhere near halfway to SA Border post !! I and many others in the the area have also been intimately involved in the public participation/objection process, and even the experts agreed it wasn't worth spending the money it would need.

I read it as the SA Gov saying "we've given up on the foolish idea of 'tarring' Sani Pass, but we're not going to admit it openly" to save face.

The next report in the EIA phase was due for release in May 2009, and never even saw the light of day more than a year later !!

Ask yourself, if after 4 yrs and about R50mil (out of R160 for the entire project) they can't even complete the "easy" 11km from the tar intersection to just past the Sani Pass Hotel, was there ever any hope they'd ever get to the top ??

went up Sani in mid July and they have only smoothed out 14km of the road from the Himeville turnoff. The grader wasn't there when we went up.

We were there yesterday and they are still grading between Himeville and the sani pass hotel. Apparently they contracted a company that was not BEE (but worked very well) who they have now replaced for a BEE company......However the Pass its self is awsome!!! Click image for larger version.
