Extream, What happened? Saw secondhand engines in junkmail from R6k-R16k. Have you had the injectors serviced at 100K km?

Hi to all, this is my dad's car so not 100% sure what happened. He was driving back home to the Free State after a visit to me. The Mahindra started (cold start) at my place with no problem and +- 20 km from my house on the N1 the enjin made a funny noise. He switch it off and re started it, enjin running but with the same funny noice... I asked him again to explain the noice but diff for the old man. Don't think its bearings... he said it sounds if the enjin is strained, no excess smoke. Best fo him is to open and see what's wrong and then I can tell whats the problem.

What other diesel enjins can one put in the Mahindra?
    Cheers

    Hi Niel
These Mahindra 2.6 engines are bulletproof if looked after. He should take it to a reputable diesel shop and have it checked out first. It might just be a faulty turbo, seized alternator or waterpump, blown off boost pipe etc. Something small. If the engine still manages to start I don't yet suspect catastrophic engine failure. Just don't start or drive it again before it is fixed.
Navigator will probably be able to suggest the best engine shop for you.

I would suggets it to find our what happend, like Marius mentioned it might be something simple - if not find out what it will cost to repair before you jump the gun and start with an engine swap modification that could cost the same or more.

Hi, sorry for taking so long. Yes the old man opened the enjine after he called a friend, started the motor and listened to the funny noice. At the end it was the timing chain as wel as the two guides that was broken. Will order the parts and replace.
    Cheers

    Hi Exstream,

Please do keep us posted on how this repair progresses, pricing of parts, availability etc. I do hope that the slack in the chain didn't cause the pistons to hit the valves. Did they pull the head to check?

    Hi Extream

I include a file for you containing information on the Mahindra timing chain, settings, tensioner settings etc.

I hope you find it helpful.

This is a bit concenrning. Timing chains and the parts that goes with them should not just fail. Is there a set distance or service interval that these parts needs to be checked? Maybee Cobus can shed some light on it.

    Default Timing Chain

Thanks Duka....for Timing Chain document that you shared with other users. This is a great way to help one another. Also good to print-off and keep in the vehicle itself....just incase one is in need and a long way from home.

So the big question... why did the chain/tentioner failed? Mmmm... Thats a tough one, maybe if I can see a sample it will help.
In some cases if the vehicle was not serviced regulary - the oil pump fail is normally the first to blame as the comtaminated oil cause damage and thus the oil pressure drop and thus the auto tensioner loose pressure and result in slack to the chain.
Maybe you should check the oil pressure when you have repaired the chain system.
Also check your lifters, if there was any contact with valve & pistons - you might need to open the motor and replace the valves & check for damages.

If one looks at the document I posted with the pictures of the timing chain and the tensioners etc. It does look like the tensioner guides are made from plastic?? Is this normal? It just looks a bit flimsy as wear and tear is concerned?

I am also concerned now, because this means that I have to check the timing chain occasionally and look for wear on the guides and tensioner? Something that is supposed to last the lifetime of the engine??

Hey Duka, you've heard of fanatics. Well we are both "Oilniks" - we change our oil so often on our Mahindras that the tensioner guides will never wear out! The only thing that's going to wear out is the sump plug!!
