Have a look att he white legs, the scaled appearance of its back and the two dark bars reaching over the shoulder (all diagnostic features). With the picture taken from the back, it is not possible to see the white belly.

This is just it. The patterned back in all the pics I've seen look totally different.

See this sample off the Net.

    Default Bird ID

    Hi Folk,

I have just started my adventure into the "Birding". The attached I need ID'd - I think it is a Kalahari Robin but am not sure. The picture has not been resized etc as yet.

I do agree with your guess as your photo is allmost a spitting immage of the photo in Ian Sinclair's book "Birds of Southern Africa"

I would say it is either an excaped female White-Thighed Hornbill or a female Brown-Cheeked Hornbill. Both are from the Cenral East Africa region.

The quality and angle of the photos make it difficult for me to say which one of the two it is.

    White Stork
    Marsh Owl
    Black-headed Heron
    Steppe Buzzard.

Note that Marsh Owl has a figure-of-eight facial disk as opposed the the heart-shaped facial disk of Grass Owl and Barn Owl.

The long, strongly decurved bill and upper chest streaks suggests Marico. The streaky chest and non-white belly should exclude White-bellied.

    Definately not a Thrush Nightingale.

Tricky one but I'm thinking juvenile LeVaillants cisticola. The jizz is classic cisticola as is the patterning on the back - not so clear on the photos.

    hehehe... ok,

The bird is far to big to be cisticola, from 3 birders, incl myself. friend of a friend reckons its unmistakable thrush nightingale..... also had somebody on www.simplybirding.co.za taking swipe at cisticola...

So you see.... inconclusive up to now.....

    Regards
