Default About to buy a 4x2 but not sure!!

    Hi All,

I am close to committing myself to the purchase of a 4x2 (and maybe the asylum) but would appreciate your opinions please.

My needs are not that demanding - I need a family vehicle to take the missus & 3 kids on camping trips and maybe a trip to Richtersveld etc. Fortunately I don't need to commute, but my big concerns are running/maintenance and fuel costs. My budget is about R100-130k.

    What I'm considering is:
2004 Nissan Hardbody 3000 TD SEL D/CAB 4X2. Asking R119k with skytop canopy. 104k on the clock and FSH. 2 prev owners.. Not seen this one yet.

2004 MAZDA DRIFTER 2.5 TD SLE DOUBLE CAB, FSH, RWB and 180k mileage. No canopy. Great condition. I have test driven this and liked it. Asking R115k..

Might consider the equivalent Isuzu (which model might be best in the price range?) The Toyota Raider also appeals to me but hear it is thirstier than most. Bit more expensive too.

My preference is for the Hardbody as I like its looks and Nissan generally, but have ability to listen to reason and change my mind Not too sure about diesel either or 4x2 vs 4x4. Help me please!

    Many thanks!

I would just say that if you can get a 4x4 get one. It opens up a world of oportunities where a 2x4 will be limited. Everyone I know who was in your situation and bought a 4x2 is now looking for a 4x4.

I am in the same position now, budget about 140k, Mazda looks like good value and what I like is that a replacement engine is about 8k (hear say) I have the Landy to do heavy 4x4 trails and stuff with, but need a camping and daily commute vehicle for my wife.

Between the two I would go for the Nissan... 4k more but 76000 km less plus the canopy (Guess this is a must have if you have 3 children) I suggest go see it, drive it and make up your mind. Remember that if your are behind the wheel its kinda difficult to enjoy the looks of a bakkie ! If you like the Nissan shop around a bit... I am sure there are plenty on the market...

Don't buy a 4x2. You will regret it. In 3 months time you will be kicking yourself for buying a 4x2.

Couple of reasons, but the main reason would be that you can't go playing with your mates.
You can also not take SWAMBO to all the exotic places.

    I would go for the 4x4 Mazda/Ford 2.5tdi.

    R115 000 for a 2004 4x2 model with 180k on is a bit much.

I would keep looking on gumtree for a better price.

If you're asking here - you know you really want a 4x4. Shop until you find the right 4x4.

    If you are still looking......

    Gumtree Advert

    2002 Ford Ranger 2.5 tdi 4x4 R84900

I bet you can get it for R80 000.

And so what if it has a bit high kilos. Your budget was 130K, so you have pleeeenty left for mods and repairs.

There are some places in the Richters where you won't be able to get to with a 4x2 loaded.
I'm thinking about those sections next to the Orange river with deep powder puff dust/sand.
