From what I've heard, cracked heads and blown gaskets are a common problem on those VM motors. Also have a tendency to run hot when pushed.

Not personal experience, but have a friend who's paid the school fees. He's also a member here. Let's hear what the other guys say.....

    what oppers said.

Very good vehicle and by the number the best XJ too have. Unfortunately they do not take abuse well. And when they do do a head its expensive to fix. So while I love my 2.5Td, I would advise against buying one with an unknown history.

So they are abit of a gamble, you may have no problems but if you do it will be expensive to repair. Abitlike owning an Alfa

    How many km?

Hi. Agree with Biggles, the diesel is great if you know its history. This pre2002 motor was used by Ford, Alfa, Rover and Toyota (86-92 European Landcruiser) and the later models motors were sorted and being old technology don't have the CRD pressures and related injector issues.
Parts are expensive, but Agents don't have many turbo or water pump sales so these don't break often. If it has a towbar, try and establish what and how often it towed. Towing is what generates the most footflat driving and potential diesel engine abuse. At 1700kg, they are excellent in sand and up to 100kph on gravel.
My 2000 model has 166K's, gives 10-12 litres per 100, compression still excellent. Never runs hot - not even thru Nam in Jan with aircon running.
Head walsh plug started leaking at 137K - R4,5K. Only other high cost has been keeping aircon going - had evaporator replaced R7,5K.
    Definitely not for sale.
Try and get compression readings done or motor assessed. If motor worn and new sleeves & pistons reqd, one hears this is R50K+.
Have met a few XJ diesels owners and they love them.

If you own an Alfa 155, why would you be happy in a diesel?? Get a XJ 4L and get done with it.

And you'll be in excellent company!!8)

Petrol is bullet proof and lively - much like a good Alfa!

Had a 1998 2.5TD myself and loved it. No major breakages but I would be careful of buying especially if major repair work has been necessary. As stated by the gents above - be skeptical if the vehicle's history is unknown.

    Good luck with your decision!
