Ford ranger Shudder problem

Hi There

i have a 2006 ford ranger xlt 2.5td super cab and the other day i had a problem where my car all of a sudden started shuddering and had a huge loss in power(on a tarred road), which to me indicates an abs problem? however my foot wasnt even on the brake and i check my handbrake wasnt engaged. i then have been having slight problems like if i free wheel my car slows down horrificly fast, and today after pulling of from a stop street it felt like i was driving a house and the shudder came back, now all of this indicates that this is abs and i have checked the fuse, has any body got ideas?

Ok- it definitely isn't your ABS.
For ABS to shudder you need to be braking to the point of locking the wheel, and only the pedal will pulse under your foot, the whole vehicle will still be smooth. A stronger clue however is that your bakkie doesn't have ABS

First check your diff lock is off. Maybe somebody bumped the switch.

Othrewise, check the brakes are free. Park on level ground and push it. It is heavy and hard to get moving, but once it's going it should continue to roll very easily. If not, perhaps a brake is binding. Jack up the wheels and spin them individually to see which one it is.

If it rolls easily, then something is wrong in the drivetrain. Look at engine and gearbox mountings and propshaft centre bearing.

If no joy, try to find the pattern. Does it shake throttle on/throttle off/steady state? Turning/straight? How smooth is the road?

hmm ok thought it did have abs, the pattern is when i pull off from a stop street just after the car has been parked for about an hour or more, happened twice today, checked the difflock as well even turned it on and off yesterday, it has happened while pulling off straight at a stop street and turning, do you think its worth taking to the stealer or somewhere else?it had been on smooth tarred roads all the time i will try all the suggestions you have and if not i will take it to a a mechanic

Is it a 4x2 or 4x4?
I assume it's in 2H if a 4x4?

It sounds like it's shuddering when power is on. I assume also that if you lift off the throttle, the shudder stops.

Start by looking at gearbox mount- make sure the rubber is good. Then check engine mounts and prop centre bearing. If all these are good then perhaps clutch.

I don't like your mention of excessive engine breaking. Binding brakes could slow you down of course, but usually juddering is from drivetrain, so I'm a little confused.

ok found the problem, there was a lot of asbestos filings in both of the back drums, cleaned those out an voila fixed....when stopped was actually causing the rear wheels to lock, causing the shuddering

I experienced the same problem on my 2.5 and it was found that when your wheel discs is warm and you travel through water the wheel disks tend to disform.
shceming your discs may be a solution to your prooblem.

Hi There, after a month or two i finally solved the problem once and for all so just putting the info on here to help people with the same problem in future

The back left wheel cylinder was leaking, cost about R2.50 per rubber seal and it needed 2, it is quite a mission to take apart and put together so if you dont have the right tools then i recommend sending it in, i honed the cylinder, replaced the rubbers, bled the brakes and then took it around the block to let it auto adjust and problem solved

By the way, the older 2.5 Rangers do not have abs...very simple brake system...
