PETROLHEADS from near and far will be driving over to Nasrec to check out the latest and most advanced vehicles on the road at the week-long Auto Africa Expo.

The motor show takes place at the Expo Centre, Nasrec, in the south of Joburg, from Saturday, 28 October to Sunday, 5 November. And more than 500 vehicles will be on display.

Manufacturers such as Mazda, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Nissan, Hyundai, Renault, Volvo are taking part, and their latest motors, from light and commercial vehicles to trucks, 4x4s and buses, will be part of the show.

According to a press release, the exhibition will showcase the South African motor industry and what it has achieved, link local markets to global markets and provide a platform from which to launch new products. There will also be advanced driving demonstrations.

Launched in 1996, Auto Africa Expo is held every second year. The main attraction this year is the Honda humanoid robot, Asimo, who is 1,2 metres tall and weighs 52 kilograms. "Asimo will demonstrate his advanced human abilities," reads the press release.

"Auto Africa Expo has established itself as one of Africa's top motor industry exhibitions, showcasing the latest inventions."

Some of the vehicles that will be on display are now being shown at the Paris Motor Show, which ends on Sunday, 15 October. Passenger vehicles will be on display in halls 5, 6 and 7 while the big wheels will be in hall 9 and Terrace 1. Hall 8 will be home to fuels and lubricants as well as major component exhibitors and hall 10 will be the equipment area.

Auto Africa Expo organiser Doris Roberts says, "I am confident that this year's exhibition will be the biggest and best exhibition presented in Africa to date."

The show, from Saturday, 28 October to Sunday, 5 November, is open from 9am to 8pm and tickets cost R20 for children under the age of 12 and R50 for adults. Tickets are available at Computicket, or phone 083 915 8000.

Hi, I will be going through on Monday afternoon...Went to Last years and really enjoyed it...lots to see, that's where I saw how incapable the BMW X5 is on a 4x4 track..also took a ride in the Mahindra scorpio on the 4x4 track and I tell you it made the X5 hide its face in shame.

This will be my fourth AutoAfrica in a row. For me it is definitely worth while.

Take my advice though, if at all possible, go during the week, as weekends are worst than the Ben Schoeman this week at peak hour. Went there on a saturday last time, could not even get to see the exotics, as we met a wall of people rigth at the door of the hall...

Berco Express just delivered two tickets given to me by BMW to go to the exhibition, to go either today or tomorrow. Unfortunately, the tickets were made out to the missus and me. She cannot go, so is there anyone willing to dress in drag and go with me as "Charmaine" I am sure the name thing will not be to much of an issue though.

So far, my calendar is open for 2day and 2morrow so I have not made up my mind when I will be going. Let me know if anyone is interested.
