    Default Towing a 4x4 Trailer

Firstly let me say I dont have a 4x4. I'f I want to play in the sand I'll go to Margate or (troosprys) play in my kid's sandpit. HE HE

I'm thinking of buying a trailer with trailer top tent to make camping a bit easier. Dont want to do the whole heavy caravan thing. It seems to me my only option is 'n 4x4 trailer, cause most of the TTT's needs to be on trailer thats 1.5m from the ground.

I must say after looking at a few trailers and looking for advice the best advice I found was reading 4x4 community's old forums. Thats why I joined, without a 4x4.

So seeing that I dont play on sand or rocks I would like to know if any of the experts can give me some advice. Will it be a problem to tow 'n 4x4 trailer with a normal car?

It's a VW caddy 1.9 tdi so I dont think the weight will be a problem, The caddy has suspension like a bakkie at the back. I just dont know if a normal car's towbar is lower(to the ground) than that of a 4x4 and if so will it be a problem if you tow a 4x4 trailer. Is the 4x4 trailer's coupler(I think thats what you call that thing that goes on the towbar) higher that a normal luggage trailer?

Kampkoos jy kan n "dropplate"sommer as n "liftplate"gebruik as jou koppeling te laag is en jou caddy sal hom sommer lekker sleep.

    KampKoos.

    Overkill - isn't!

    Hi Kosie

As you have probably noticed by reading through the forum archives the 4x 4 bunch is really an ingenuity rich bunch if you can get us out of the sand and away from our castles. In designing our trailers we just knew that there will be some serious guys that do not play in the sand that might be interested in using our toys so we made the trailer so that the tow hitch will fit a lower car just as well as hooking on to a bus. One size fits all.
On our 4 X 4 monsters we usually have rather big wheels so as not to get stuck too often when playing in the sand or worse mud (it is only fun when we want to get stuck) This might be a bit of an issue as we use the same wheels on the trailer and this would result in the one that is hitched on to a "plat kar" to have an excessive nose down attitude, better than a nose high attitude for towing but transmitting more weight on to the tow bar.
Speaking of weight, our vehicles average more than 1.5 ton so we do not have big problems as far as weight is concerned but with a caddy at about 900kg there might be some legal dilema in case of a road block.

Ek gaan juis nou so laai stelsel in my bakkie sit - aangepas vir ons situasie.
