Folks are also welcome to check out my web site www.johanmarais.co.za or E-mail me [email protected] for snake identification. You can also send an MMS to 0824942039 but photographs per E-mail work better.

I once met a snake in the Bushveld between Pietersburg and Koedoeskop (not my natural habitat) and, so far, nobody could tell me what it was:
- it lifted its head and stood about 1,6 metres tall, how much remained on the ground I could not see.
- it was black with some greenish-silversish underneath the throat area
- it did not have a pronounced cupped head like a cobra, it cupped much smaller
- it remained upright and seemed quite brazen
- as it remained like that for a while, I slowly retreated. Last time I looked at it, it was still in defensive mode.
I have asked farm guys from the region but received conflicting reports, ranging from rinkhals to black mamba....but black mamba isn't black, rather pale with a black inner mouth? Rinkhals........that big?

From your description the only snake that I know of that could match yours is a black mamba. Their colour does vary but I have never seen a dark black one myself... dark greyish yes.
No rinkhals would grow to that size, they only get to about 1.6m. (a strong snake like a mamba lifts about a third of it's body off the ground... so it would make a 1.6m off the ground snake about 13-14ft in total... can't think of any other snake it could be)

Could you describe the shape of the head?
Johan is the expert but you guys are welcome to contact me as well; particularly for species in the Cape. Either upload your sightings directly on www.capesnakeconservation.com/snake-sightings/ or email them to me at [email protected]

Yes, the SAVP's new website is a bit of an abortion. Many of the images have been copied from the Internet by someone who clearly does not know what they are doing.
Rather use another website for asssitance.
