Question Urban legend, web scam, email scam, gullible rubbish, whatever: Recent threads merged

Received this email, wondered if any of you had any info on this?

A short code is a 5 digit cellphone number such as 35050 to which an SMS is sent by people and they receive a response to it, such as receiving a poem, a horoscope or it can be a competition with a prize. This SMS can cost the sender anything between R1.00 and R15.00 and if you were the owner of such a number, you would have received roughly half of this amount as revenue multiplied by the number of SMS's you received.

We have recently done a short code on the R1.50 price band for someone where a person could receive his or her horoscope upon sending an SMS. A total of 700 000 SMS's were received and at an average revenue of 33c per SMS, a total profit of R230 000 was made.

You can easily be the owner of such a short code service at a very low cost. We will set everything up for you and administrate it.

A short code can easily be used to have your customers let you know that they are interested in your product and you can then follow it up with them. In this case you might not make any revenue directly from the SMS's, but as a result of it.

Contact us or reply to this email for more details.

If you do not want to receive any information from PayPROFIT in the future, reply to this email with the word STOP as the subject.

Don't know of this particular company, but what he has to offer is possible.

It's the same as these daily prayer and stuff that they advertise on TV. SMS blahblah to 33333, you get charge R30 and you receive a ringtone. Part of that R30 goes to the cellphone service provider (Vodacom for instance) and the rest goes to whoever runs the service.

This only really works if you can do it in bulk.

This sounds the same as my fax to email I do , yes you can make money , but before making anything you would need to spend money as with anything ells. Buying servers , software , Bandtwith Etc

And yes you only make lost of money with volumes , Large volumes , and for that you need large advertising , Witch in the case above , I think the advertising to get the 700 thousend SMS's cost mos than the 230 grand that was made ? I could be wrong but i have seen it with my business , the advertising cost does not justify the profits ...

    Question Another Scam?

    Dear Friends;
Please do not take this for a junk letter. Bill Gates is sharing his
    fortune. If you ignore this,
    You will repent later.
Microsoft and AOL are now the largest Internet companies and in an
    effort to make
sure that Internet Explorer remains the most widely used program,
    Microsoft and
AOL are running an e-mail beta test. When you forward this e-mail to
friends, Microsoft can and will Track it
(If you are a Microsoft Windows user)? For a two weeks time period.
For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you
$245.00 For every person that you sent it to that forwards it on,
    Microsoft
will pay you $243.00 and ! for every third person that receives it, You
    will
be paid $241.00. Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact you for your
address and then send you a check.

I thought this was a scam myself, But two weeks after receiving this
e-mail and forwarding it on. Microsoft contacted me for my address and
within days, I receive a check for $24, 800.00. You need to respond
before the beta testing is over. If anyone can afford this, Bill gates
    is the man.
It's all marketing expense to him. Please forward this to as many people
    as possible.
You are bound to get at least $10, 000.00. We're not
going to help them out with their e-mail beta test without getting a
little something for our time. My brother's girlfriend got in on this a
    few months
ago. When I went to visit him for the Baylor /UT game. She showed me her
    check.
It was for the sum of $4, 324.44 and was stamped 'Paid in full'
Like I said before, I know the law, and this is for real.
Intel and AOL are now discussing a merger which would make them the
largest Internet company and in an effort make sure that AOL remains the
    most
widely used program, Intel and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.
When you forward this e-mail to friends, Intel can and will track it (if
you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period.
Try it; What have you got to lose !
For what Its worth die vrou werk saam met my suster (die bankrekening
    afskrif).

When you forward this e-mail to friends, I! Ntel can and will track it (if
you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period.
For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you
    $203.15.
For every person that you sent it to that forwards it on, Microsoft will
    pay you $156.29
And for every third person that receives it , you will be paid $17.65.
Within two weeks, Intel will contact you for your address and then send you
    a check.
I thought this was a scam myself, but a friend of my good friend's Aunt
Patricia, who works at Intel, actually got a check of $4,54323 by
    forwarding this e-mail.

It works I just checked, my bank account and found extra R20 000

I was sent this one from Facebook........

    Greetings
I know that this letter may be a very big surprise to you, I came across your email contact from my personal search and I believe that you will be honest to fulfill my final wish before I will die.
I am Mrs. Gloria Caldwell from LONDON, I am 58 years old, and I am suffering from a long time cancer of the breast. From all indication my condition is really deteriorating, and my doctors have courageously advised me that I may not live beyond next month, this is because the cancer stage has reached a critical stage. I was brought up in a motherless baby’s home, and was married to my late husband for twenty years without a child. My husband and I are true Christians, but quite unfortunately, he died in a fatal motor accident.
Since his death I decided not to re-marry, I sold all my inherited belongings and deposited all the sum of $3.2 Million dollars with a Financial Security Company. Presently, this money is still in their custody, and the management just wrote me as the legitimate depositor to inform me of the maturity date of my deposit or rather issue a letter of authorization to somebody to receive it on my behalf since I can not come over as a result of my illness, or they get it confiscated. Presently, I'm with my laptop in a hospital where I have been undergoing treatment and my doctors have told me that I have only a few months to live.
It is my last wish to see that this money is invested in any organization of your choice and proceeds distributed each year among the charity organization, the poor and the motherless baby’s orphanage homes and widows around. I must let you know that this was a very hard decision, but I had to take a bold step towards this issue because I have no further option. I hope you will help see my last wishes come true.
As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Security Company. I will also issue you a letter of authority, which will prove that you are the new beneficiary of my funds. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I stated herein. Hope to hear from you soonest.
Please if you are really touched with my story and wish to assist me in getting this project done REPLY TO MY ALTERNATIVE EMAIL: [email protected]
