Peter I need some help, I am shooting a lot of birds in the flyover for the challenge with the d850 and 200-500 at 500 f5.6, iso 1000, 1/4000. And they are just not coming out sharp enough? I think the lense is just not coping with the distance? Because everything close is great?

    Example 1 and 2. Attachment 563419Attachment 563420

Both from the back yard this morning, one closer and one further, same settings and edit basically except the crop on the darter is more because its so far away and the iso is coming through hectically.
Gif, I think you are expecting too much. Or, in other words, atmospheric disturbances.
That is a big bird, so if it's significantly cropped as you say it is, it must have been a hell of a long way away!

Fallen another 100 positions back. Can we see where these Observer’s are logging these results? Surely they must be locked down in the Kruger or somewhere like that?!?

Is 169 possible? You’d have to live on a farm or game reserve.

I know Adam and Ivor, they are both on a game reserve in the Mkuze area, so have a distinct advantage. Adam is also one of the world’s top birders so not much is going to get past him.

Yeah these guys are in nice places, saw a farm in muldersdrift and lanseria the other in marloth park and as mentioned those north coast ones.

I am very happy with my 45, even tried throwing out some seed and fruit and made a branch that the birds don't trust. At least I have photographic proof of most.

I managed to sort of rescue this shot from yesterday morning, I was so excited to see the feeding that fired away without checking the settings and everything came out basically black. Exposed 4.5 and tried everything on ON1 and this was the best I could do. Click image for larger version.

They should split us in groups, people in city’s with less than 100 m moving space, people in farms and small holdings with less than 10km moving space and then the lucky once in and around reserves or more than 10km moving space?!?

He’ll get there easily. I predict he’ll go over 200.

Edit - maybe we should start a new thread so as not to interfere with the bird pics? Your call BR.

Maybe a good idea, I'm at 55 birds but nothing new today, but I have a few nice pictures I hope, will start editing tonight and write a blog post too.

    The raptor is stunning.
    Heron and Kingfishers are beautiful.
The cormorant would have been wonderful if it wasn't for the mist (but maybe that's just personal preference).
Perhaps consider cropping out the back two Whistling Ducks? The one being cut in half seems a bit awkward to me.
