Please report all feedback (questions, errors, comments) regarding this beta software ONLY through the Garmin Product Feedback page with the following information:
Windows Mobile Device you are using this application on.
Application version (found in Garmin Mobile XT under Settings -> About page).
Steps to reproduce the failure.
Check your device for the following file: \Garmin\errlog.txt. If this file exists, please attach the file in the report.
Please only include one problem per feedback report.
This application is only supported for devices running Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 or later.
This beta Garmin Mobile XT application offers:
Both 2D and 3D map viewing options.
Finger touchable interaction rather than having to use a stylus.
PeerPoints feature for phones lets you send location messages via SMS to any other phone. When receiving a PeerPoint message, you can view or route to the sender's position with Garmin Mobile XT.
Garmin Online service for location relevant content. Free weather and traffic (for major US cities) is available. Note that live traffic features (using traffic in routing and map drawing) require version 7 NT (or later) maps in the US (differs in Europe). Also note that the safety camera download feature is for Europe and is not functional yet.
Ability to add custom POIs such as school zones and safety camera locations using POI Loader.
Problems? Try these useful tips:
Install the application to the default directory - installing the application to a storage card may result in an unstable condition.
Remove storage cards with mapsets installed on them when opening the application for the first time. After the application is running, reinsert the storage card.
Reverting to previous software revisions for the GPS 10 will clear all user data (waypoints, trip computer data, etc.). The Garmin Que application is considered to be a previous software revision.
If map installation is necessary, use the product CD provided with your Garmin GPS 10.
If you would like to use MapSource with the Garmin Mobile XT beta application, you will need to update your MapSource product with the latest version (6.11.3) posted August 1, 2006. This download can be found at MapSource update.
There are some important differences in Garmin Mobile XT vs. Garmin Que with GPS 10 that you should note:
Garmin Mobile XT does not provide configurable data fields on the map display.
Garmin Mobile XT does not provide mapping of device buttons to specific Garmin Mobile XT application functions.
Garmin Mobile XT does not provide 'Sun and Moon' or 'Hunt and Fish' utilities.
There may be other functions that Garmin Mobile XT does not provide that are not listed here.
Known issues:
This release is for English only text. Other languages will not be available in Settings->Display until the translations are available.
The web server used for Garmin Online data may not always be available as it is being used for beta application testing. You may disable access by modifying Settings -> Garmin Online -> Garmin Online Access.
Live traffic features (using traffic in routing and map drawing) require version 7 (or later) NT maps in the US (differs in Europe).
The Garmin Que installation CD will place the voice files in a directory that Garmin Mobile XT does not use if installed onto an SD card. To use these voice files after installation:
Using your device's file manager, browse to the storage card. You should see a directory similar to \SD Card\Garmin Que - ***** Voice\ where the *.wav files are stored.
Create a directory at \SD Card\Garmin\Voice\*****\. Use one of the following names (exactly) for the *****: Danish, Dutch, American Eng, British Eng, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish.
Move all of the *.wav files from the \SD Card\Garmin Que - ***** Voice\ directory to the newly created directory.
Change your voice file setting within the Garmin Mobile XT application (Settings - Audio - Voice).
This software is intended for use with the Garmin GPS 10. This software should only be downloaded to the unit for which it is intended. If this software is downloaded to a GPS unit other than the product it is designed for, it may render the unit inoperative. If the software download fails and subsequent download attempts prove unsuccessful, the unit may need to be returned for service.
Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk.

Instructions for using this software


As with all software installation and updates, please be sure to backup all important files before attempting to update your device.
Place your Pocket PC in the cradle. Ensure ActiveSync is running and connected.
Start installing the update to your Pocket PC by selecting the 'Download' link found on this web page.
Choose to 'Open' or 'Run' the update file. This step will launch the install program.
Follow directions given by installer.
Please note that the Garmin Mobile XT application requires an update to the GPS 10 hardware. This update will be downloaded to your PPC device during the installation procedure and an update screen for the GPS 10 will appear on your device the first time you connect to the GPS 10 using the new Garmin Mobile XT application. This update should take approximately 2-3 minutes to complete.

System requirements

IBM-compatible PC running Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP operating system and an available USB port.

I don't know if anybody has seen or posted abouth this, but Nashua Mobile have a special on their 100/120 min contracts for a Nokia N-70 and the Garmin GPS 10. It comes with a software bundle for the Nokia which is Symbian OS.

I assume the software Dirk wrote about will work with this on a PDA and then also the Mapsource products on a laptop. Has anybody taken up their deal and checked if it works OK?

I think the software I posted is only for PocketPC. I hav'nt found the symbian software yet (not that I looked for it that hard though).

I've played with the beta version of the pocketpc, but hav'nt used it. Must say I did'nt have much joy, there's an earlier thread about that.

But that said remember mine was beta, and I don't know if the device we used was supported.

OK, I have committed to the deal. I was due for upgrade so went with the N70 and Garmin 10. I will test drive it on the N70, on my PDA2K and also on the laptop. Will let you guys know as soon as it arrives.

Cannot answer your question directly, but only time will tell, for me it important to be able to run T4A, as in PE nobody needs streetmaps!

You will get the new mapset with the Garmin 10X Deluxe, but bear in mind that the mapping software will be product-tied to your phone and cannot be transferred to another GPS when you upgrade from that phone. It is also clumsy to use when driving, no handy dashboard or windscreen mount.

I would humbly suggest you rather think of a dedicated GPS unit.

What about using a RAM mount? The screen on my cellphone is bigger than my GPS, and I think the N70's screen is most probably also bigger than the the Quest?

Eric, I might be talking under correction here but the mapsets are normally tied to the GPS. In the case of a bluetooth GPS it is an interesting question, is it tied to GPS or the device with the maps on? From Garmap's forum it seems that the mapset is tied to the BT GPS and you can move the SD card with the maps between different phones. But I will definitely check when I get the damn thing. Was supposed to get today.

As Dirk said, I am also not after the streetmaps but rather want to run Ozi and T4A. With the XT software for PDA I can run T4A with the bluetooth GPS as well as Ozi. I can also run T4A and Ozi on my laptop. Then I can still run streetmaps on the N70 phone which is a more likely device to have with me when around town.

I don't think the phone will be such a great device when tripping but it is still going to work. I prefer Ozi when tripping cause nothing beats an aerial photograph or sat photo for finding interesting features. Yes, Garmap Topo is damn impressive but a sat photo kicks butt, and is a helluva lot cheaper than Garmap Topo. Nevermind the cost of the GPS required to make use of it.

So Imvubu, if you are really clueless it might be better to buy a standalone GPS where you aren't worried about connections and protocols etc. You just switch on and use. If you really want to get into GPS and especially mapping then a bluetooth unit is very flexible, you'll need to travel with a laptop though to make full use of the function, but not absolutely necessary. Problem is when you are hiking or cycling you'll end up with 2 devices with you, the BT GPS and your phone or PDA.

My main concern about buying a GPS is that it will probably only be used once a year. If I go for a 'proper' GPS , which second hand units are worth looking at and which should be avoided?

If you're buying 2nd hand, and you don't want streetmaps with auto routing then I'd go for a GPS V.

I 2nd that. However, the 'old' GPS V does have auto-routing and you can upload streetmaps. The screen is small, black & white, and memory only 19MB which should be sufficient for your needs.

Unfortunately the GPS unit is on back-order. Typical local service, sell stuff they don't have. In the States it is actually illegal. I'll let you guys know as soon as I have it. If that is this year still.
