    Default Which 4x4 Triton - 3.2 or 2.5?

    I have decided to buy the Triton.

    Now to decide between the 3.2 4x4 or the 2.5 4x4 version. I have spoken to salesmen saying they dont make the 2.5 4x4 anymore although you might find a low km 2008 registered as a 2009. Apparently stopped making the 2.5 4x4 version in 2008?

    Looking at the specs of the 2 versions, the 3.2, 118 kw and 343 NM torque VS the 2.5 100 kw and 314 NM torque, there is not such a big difference? And the rest of the vehicle is exactly the same, interior an exterior?

    I want to use it for trips up north, Namibia and Mosambique. Not really into hardcore catogory 5 obstacles and soforth. Mostly a reliable 4x4 that you can go to Bots, Namibia and Mosambique. So it must be able to handle sand an water with ease.

    Can the members with hands on knowledge of the 2 version please post their recommendations and views here?

    The 3.2 has been around for a decade and is slowly achieving legend status.

    BUT, to the best of my knowledge is the Pajero Super Select 4x4 system in the 2.5 and not in the 3.2. That has been debated before and if my memory serves me correctly, is a function of import specs from Australia, or something like that. To my own mind, your choice is a bit of a Mexican stand-off.

    Drive both and decide!

    For about R8000 more you can get the 3.5 V6.There are specials running on them for R305 000.

    Default The 2.5 does it 4 me

    I might, as a very Proud South African live in Ireland but still closely observe whats happening in the SA car market end very much so with the 4x4/bakkie, simply coz I still drive use my bakkie/4x4 like a South African
    I went to a Mitsubishi dealer in Cape Town with my brother in Law to drive 3.5 triton. The first thing I noticed on 3.2 & 3.5 was the easy select 4wd instead of super select 4wd, I have an Pajero Pinnin /IO and that has ss4wd so why not the 3.2, 3.5 but the 2.5 a bit silly for me. Dont no if 3.2 & 3.5 have the traction control and the very back electric window, all this is very helpfull on my 2.5.
    Now performance, dont let anybody tell U its underpowered, had 285/55/R18 wheels on for 55k/km and still got 15sec to a 100km/h and 175km/h (spedo reading) and most importantly the 9-10l/100km is no bother/problem

    Yes 2.5 does not make much less than the 3.2, but its all about how the power is delivered

    I used your graphs to support your statement: "but its all about how the power is delivered".

    They are close only at 2000rpm, then the 2.5 has 91%Nm and 94%Kw of the 3.2.
    Very significant is when the revs drop to 1500, then the 2.5 is at 86%Nm and 80%kw.
    At 3000rpm the 2.5 is at 80%Nm and 82%Kw.

    This suggests that at normal cruising, the 2.5 will be close to the 3.2, but with considerable less "grunt" at 1500 and at higher revs considerable less "overtaking-type" power, either by dropping a gear or picking up speed in top.

    My "Mexican standoff" statement still stands. The one has the engine of choice (power delivery as well as legendary reliability) and the other one has the 4x4 system of choice.

    Any prospective buyer that faces this decision, should decide where his personal preference is, engine power or better 4x4 system - and I still maintain: drive both and decide!

    I bought the 2.5 last year April and am very very happy with it, I have done Berakha and a few other trails and have not had any issues with power delivery at all, the reason I went for the 2.5 is the 4x4 specs that are different to the 3.2. This in my opinion is a go anywhere 4x4 vehicle.

    I might be wrong here but does the 3.2 also have the central diff lock, I seem to remember that the one I test drove did not, but as I say I might be wrong check it out. I know the 2.5 has central diff lock and seperate rear diff lock opperated.

    3.2 over the 2.5 the increase in power is noticable. If you are not worried about consumpion and then the petrol.
    However I would only keep the 3,2 as a main vehicle if in warrentee

    I have the 2.5 4 x 4, i just love it, it goes anywhere where all my friends with their petrol cars and some bigger diesels go. And consumption is great.

    I am also the proud owner of a Triton 2.5 super select 4x4. Recently changed the rubber to 265/75/16". Not al lot of places it will not go. I love it

    Look at my thread there was a long discussion of the 2.5 vs. 3.2

    I have the 2.5 with 265/75/R16 and miss the power below 2000rpm, would have liked to have the power of the 3.2.

    I too have the 2.5, and extremely happy with it. Yes, its not as torquey is the 3.2 low down, but runs like a bomb on the open road, has got plently enough grunt in low range to combat most obstacles (unless you are into extreme 4x4 stuff) and I get really good consumption out of it. Mine is the import version so have all the luxuries of the 3.2 and more, so all in all I am very chuffed..
