Ethiopia

Hi here from a lovely Ethiopia. The first thing I notice in Addis Abba was a Toyota dealer as big as the one in Sandton. Not sure if Sandton service will keep up with theirs .

The first thing that strikes me is the beauty of this country and the friendly people.The coffee is the best will bring some home for Herman I know he enjoys good coffee.

And again there are more Toyotas on the roads than any other make I still wonder why.

Will post pics at a later stage the one thing that sucks is the Internet connectivity..

I'll have to bug you later Frik. I have not even started researching Ethiopia apart from entering from the lake Turkana side. When I know more, I'll ask specific questions.

Dawie, Frik, I have loads of Ethiopia info if needed. We spent two months there, and it is one of the most fascinating countries I have travelled through. My favourite places are the Bale Mountains, the churches at Lalibela, Gonder, Lake Tana, the Simyen Mountains, Addis itself, and the ancient city of Harar.

We spent five weeks in Ethiopia en route from the UK to Kenya (and are heading ultimately on to Cape Town). We are two people driving in a Land Rover Defender. Ethiopia is to be thoroughly recommended and is a fascinating and enthralling country. We spent a lot of the time on the roads less travelled and often went for hours without seeing another vehicle. If anyone wants any information, let me know.

We came down the track from near Omorate in SW Ethiopia past the Omo Delta to Lake Turkana. We didn't see another vehicle for two and a half days - last vehicle near Omorate and next one an hour north of Loyengalani in Kenya. That route down the east side of Lake Turkana is not for the faint-hearted or the ill-prepared as it is seriously remote and far from help. But we have been to Lake Turkana twice before so knew what to expect, I am Kenya born and bred, and we were mechanically sound. We carried enough fuel for over 1000 kms, and sufficient water. It was the most amazing adventure on some pretty intrepid tracks, lava flows, sand pans and lava stone hills.

We did this route on our own, but for others it might be advisable to go with another vehicle. There are no Kenya border controls on this track, and Customs and Immigration procedures need to be done on arrival in Nairobi (or if going north, before leaving Nairobi). There are efficient Ethiopian Customs and Immigration at Omorate. You do need to get an Ethiopian visa before if you are travelling north. I have posted information on this route on the HUBB.
