Ethiopia

Hi anybody been to Ethiopia recently. I start with a new project there early next year and a few hints on what to do and what not is welcome.

Tricky Dick on the forum has just returned from Ethiopia, maybe PM him. I posted some advice to him here http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...ad.php?t=35705 just before he left. He also kept a blog at http://dickblogg.blogspot.com Where in Ethiopia are you going? This is germane because the regions are very different, and could be separate countries. For example, if you are going to be in the Ogaden, there are security concerns, in the Awash area there's malaria, etc etc.

Hi Frik-

I was there May 2008. We were in Addis Ababa for a week and then drove south to Awassa and the Sidama area.
What exactly did you want to know?
I can tell you that the main road from Addis to Awassa was very good by African standards and that's why there were so many crashes! A lot of small van buses with worn out tires drive very fast, so just be careful for them. I was told that some of the drivers are drunk. All I can say is that we came upon a horrific accident at 12 noon just north of Awassa and there were a lot of (dead) bodies all over the road. Not a nice sight, especially since my 5 year old daughter was with me at the time.
