Does anyone know how search engines like Google work? Can they be manipulated to display you website above others?

If I type 4x4 forum on Google I get the following results:

In short it keyword distribution plays a big role, but also remember the dark side's been on the net for year, and already indexed. Typically after adding a new site it can take up to 6 weeks for the engines to find it. I've submitted a full sitemap to Google on Saturday, it's downloaded the sitemap, but it must still go and index the pages, that will happen soon.

Usually the moment there are regular changes on the pages (as in this case) google will start to visit the pages on a regular, ie daily basis and update its index.
