Default Best sortraoder rand for KW/Fun?

    Hi guys,

Looking for a FUN softroader for weekends and for getting in and out of low undercover parking. (Ranger is often too tall)

This is a second car and I am looking for max fun for my buck new, but needs to be safe for when I put it in a tree. (Euroncap 5 star only)

    Looked at Merc GLA 250 155KW, Volvo V40 XC T5 180KW, Subaru forester XT 177KW, BMW X1 28i 180KW, Audi Q3 155kw Quattro, Audi A4 all road 165kw.

    Your thoughts?

The Merc is nice looking and I like the gearbox, but room in the back is a little tight and would like more power. AMG version is too expensive, like Porsche Macan money.

Drove the Audi A3, not a very exciting car and ride a little harder than the Merc and all road although a nicer ride feels disconnected and less agile than the A3.

Never liked the Freelander, although I hear they are great now. Think I will wait for the Disco Sport to test if going the Rover route...

They've got better Fluffy. Agreed that they used to be really nasty. But that symmetrical AWD system is better than all those others.

The Forester XT has a CVT gearbox and the journo's were not too impressed with it. Anyone given it a test drive?

CVT is horrible. Avoid. Get something with a proper gearbox. Some amazing specials to be had on Freelander 2 right now.

Think it was in the last leasure wheels. They complaint was with regards to "feel" or something like that. Not sure exactly, but was the only complaint.

    Ah Leasire wheels :-).......

The Jap CVT's tends to be behind the Germans but Subaru is one of the better ones.

I've driven a few Jap CVTs including the Outlander. Admittedly they were a little agricultural & way behind the likes of Audi.

Actually, that was a trap, and you walked right into it

Prius, my dear friend, is NOT CVT, it turns out. Too ineffecient, you know :-)

Seriously though, I wouldn't want a CVT box in an off-roader. If you want a capable good value softroader that can go very far off road you'd do well to get a Freelander 2.

You might want to tell Toyota because they are of the belief that they've stuck a cvt into the Prius.

Soon plenty of new 4x4s will be CVT because of the sense it makes. No more transfer cases with a host of other advantages.

They call it a CVT so that people might have an idea what to expect, but it's NOT a CVT. To see what it actually is and how it works you'll need to watch a few YouTube videos or read some looong description.

I hear you on the advantages of CVT in an off-roader, but I'd still be wary of owning a high mileage CVT out of warranty. They can say what they like, it's still a steel chain running on a variable conical pulley. Skip one oil change and you have a lovely grinding paste going.
