    Default Berakah - Midnight Madness

The Guys got there early and Eager

My afternoon went something like this ....

2:00pm : To Berakah for the Night Drive !!!
    5:00pm : Tents up
    6:00pm : Rain
6:30 pm : Rain gone and the last glimmer of sunlight hits the crests of the shadowed koppies
7:30pm :The campsite conversations are drowned by the sound of deflating tires
    7:45pm :Report for Driver briefing
    8:10pm :
Across the wooden start bridge and in to the riverbed run , Through narrow passages in the dark , Navigating nervously through the tree line and carefully watching the tall shadow figures disapear in the side mirrors . Out we come and in the clear , sheww !

Now searching for the missing tail lights of the vehicle that was once right in front of you , Cruising in 2nd to catch up , nothing , then 3rd gear , still nothing , break slightly for a small corner , round we go ... And then out of no where the road disappears underneath the front wheels! Suddenly your looking square 90degress at the ground 2m down, I swear my break lights shone brighter then they ever have before !!! , Like a Red beam extending from a black hole in the road into the heavens .

Cleaned the seat and off we go , up and down the rocky mountain !!!

Into the murky water one by one and up the ravine , the moon is peeking through the clouds as we cross a small wooden bridge .

Then silence , break lights illuminate the narrow rocky road , slowly inching between the thin trees wondering whats up next

"Another log bridge" someone says , "ok sound's good" i think to myself... but then Time Out !!! , Crossing a log bridge is scary on its own , but try to do this when the bridge is over something so deep & dark you cant see the bottom is a whole other story ! . Slowly , very slowly , i mean very, very slowly we make our way across into the crammed parking lot on the other side .

"Up ahead is a little decent" say Andre { the Guide } , Now in anticipation
we watch the first brave soldier to disappear over the ridge ,Silence for a second and Then break lights! ,screeching tyres! followed by a longer roar of more screeching tyres .

Swambo says "Take me home ,now !!!". ( by the way if she tells you that I said it first , dont believe Her ) .

"little bit slippery" someone says .... Its a little after 10:00pm by now and the dew has began to fall , the obstacles mostly covered in concrete are moist ,not to mention its obvious that no-one has sweeped the gravel off them in a while ! .

So one by one we are each faced with the same terrifying screeching sound & the feeling of "why am i sliding down a perfectly good piece of concrete with a perfectly good set of tyres".

Adrenaline is still rushing , Andre says " Who want's to go up" .

Of course, nobody can resist ! . This proved much more difficult than it appeared and it consisted mostly of more than one attempt , a few "Ahhh's" , "oohhhs" , "LETS STAND FURTHER BACK " and lots of burning rubber.

No time to spare off we go to the next raggedy rush , Very similar to the previous one but add a few axle twisters and twice the length . The night air once again filled with Breaks , Slipping , Sliding and 4x4's traversing 15m of slope in 3 seconds , some followed by a very disturbing "CRASH" sound , one or two even ending up at the bottom facing 60degress East instead of North .

Last but not least Elephant hill , We make our way up to meet a very calm and collected Andre . At this point you can not see much more than the stars ,but you need to go over the top and then down , Its Dark really Dark so when you finally get over the top , all you see is Pitch Black .

"There a little hole on the right , but you will be fine" he says ... "funny guy" ! i thought to myself when watching how half a defender 90 disappeared into this little hole ! .

But down all we safely emerged , some of us licking our wounds or side steps ( or lack there of ) .

This concluded the nights events and off we slowly crept in the dark back to camp for some well deserved rest !

This was a great experience and something unforgettable !!! , How i wish you all could have joined us to share this fun . Thanks to the guys at Berakah for making this happen . I will see you at the Next One !!!

I did not manage to get any pics of the night drive but have some from the following morning . Enjoy !

I am aware that some of the members on this night drive consumed alcohol whilst on the trail, and would like to state for the record, if you join an outing arrange for or by 4x4Community members, or any outing that was arranged on this forum, with the members here, then drinking and driving will not be tolerated.

I WILL ban any person from using this website if they unable to drive a trail without alcohol, it irresponsible, placing other people's lives in danger as well as their own.

Drunk and irresponsible drivers are not welcome here, not negotiable.

Thanks for organizing BOB it was a really good idea, such a shame that they probably wont do it again Thanks to some who can't seem to understand drinking and driving is utterly irresponsible not to mention a 4x4 route at night.

This was my first time to Berakah and my first night drive ! its an awesome trail with lovely scenery.

I was amazed how much easier the course was the following morning with different conditions! 8)

However on a sad note, Some of the nights events were unfortunate .

Looks like I missed out on alot of fun!

I must agree with Dirk though that any person using alcohol on a trail should not only be banned from the forum but also from the trail and other trails.
That is very irresponsible and selfish.

    Wink

rage101.......I must commend you on an excellent report with graphic pictures. This makes the posts very interesting to us on lookers here in the Cape who never get to do anything nice ..A night drive is something special for most of us and has other challenges to worry about.

O/T !!!!!but i have given people the boot on my rides who drink and drive. One guy told me a real man has a brandy and coke after each obstacle. Well he never got to see the first obstacle. Now he refused to leave, and he was huge so i called the farmer and he was frog marched off the farm and his vehicle with loaded up fully stocked bar was driven out. No !!!not a forum member. But i stand for no nonsense. I dont want a drunk ramming me off the mountain thanks. I echo what Dirk has said. The two definately dont mix.

Hope to see more pics on this night ride though.

It seems that there was more than one person involved unfortunately.

I think something needs to be done about it. Seen it quite a few times and they are the few that give the entire community a bad name.
