    Default Richtersveld/Namakwa eco trail

A question to members that have done the above. I am in the planning stages of a 14 day trip to the Richtersveld, including the Namakwa Eco trail. The plan is to go during March next year, finishing before the schools close. Can I just pack my vehicle and go. Or do I have to make certain pre-bookings? Thanks in advance

You need to contact Springbok Tourism and pay them R150.00 pv for however long you wish to stay on the route. Then camp where you like! It's great.

For the Namaqua Eco Trail you have to obtain a permit costing R150/section as mentioned above.
Contact Marike Grootboom (027) 712 8035/6. Once payment is made she fax or mails the permit to you quickly, you don't have to go all the way to Springbok. Our permits got checked at Pella at the cathedral.

For the Richtersveld you can contact Sanparks to find out if pre-booking is necessary. Shouldn't be too busy that time of year.

    Talking Namakwa / Richtersveld

    Hi spook,
Just returned from the Namakwa trail. If you don't rush and stop to talk to the locals you will find it an amazing trip. Marika is quick and efficient and you have your permits within 24 hours of faxing / e-mailing deposit slip.
There are a couple of errors on the route, as distributed, which I am busy addressing (we got slightly lost twice) but otherwise the route is clear and precise.
Two separate sections - Pofadder - Vioolsdrift and Vioolsdrift - Kleinzee. The first is a SLOW three days, unless you are in a hurry and very interesting. The second is a SLOW two days. If you rush you will regret it !!!
Tracks are what tracks are supposed to be BUT the Provinicial gravel roads are TERRIBLE !!!! Everything gets shaken loose. There are times where you just vibrate to a stop, regardless of what you do. Take spanners to fit everything and stop regularly to take photos, smell the dust, have tea, and tighten up all the loose nuts and bolts.
Take LOTS of water - it gets phenomenally HOT and well points are few and far between. The local water can be brackish and a lot of the locals use the river water to drink. Is your constitution that strong
Make sure that 4 WD works and LO range - there are one or two sections where LO range is essential to climb up the loose rocky terrain. Many short sandy spots where 4 WD is a great help. Average speed 40 kph is comfortable and enjoyable.
Will send you more later. Must dash off to work for some strange reason.

Wanneer gaan julle daar wees? Ons sal so by 21 Maart in die Richtersveld ingaan.
