Hi Guys,

Just finished building a new slide for the bin.
I went for a flat slide instead of the drawer system as I feel that this gives one more flexibility when it comes to packing. Loose boxes on top does the trick for me.

It was a lot easier than I thought.

I tested it with 90kgs of "live load" and it still cleared the end of the tailgate by 5mm.
Started building another one at high level, just high enough to clear my fridge.
Will post as soon as this is finished.

Onthou net dat die toegelate massa op die slides net op 450mm extension is, nie op vol extension nie.

Ja, die supplier het genoem dat die gewig op 450mm geneem word,
maar soos dit 'n goeie ISUZU man betaam wou ek dit net 'n bietjie verder toets as wat ek toegelaat word.............

All in it was just shorth of R900.

I've had one or two requests for more details from Coop and others.

I bought the slides from “Furnlock & Slide” in Cape Town (021 558 3373).
I used the 7330 x 1m long.

Attached is a section of the build-up that I designed and used.
You can find all the aluminium and Connect-It blocks at Maizey’s in Paarden Island (021 511 9783)
See their website for details on how this works – very simple and cheap – it saved me a lot of time.
They will cut the aluminium for you to exact lengths.

I also glued a thin rubber mat to the top to prevent slipping.
The whole thing took me about 7 hours to build, spread over a couple of nights during the week, as I sorted out details and bought the stuff bit by bit as I went along.

Nic Job well done.

However, I have a few questions:
1. I assume that your alluminium frame have a few support to prevent sagging
2. what locking mechanism do you plan to use?
3. how do you tie down your stuff on top of the slide

Francois,
1. The aluminium all round frame and 16mm supawood make for a very rigid platform. It's a bit heavy though. For the upper side I'll be using plywood with intermediate support yes.

2. No locking mechanism currently, but realised this will be necessary when parked on an incline. Anysuggestions?

3. I've added small ring type tie-downs on both sides of the platform at 300mm c/c in order to tie straps to.

I used this type with my fridge slide:


(Just attach a piece of flat metal with a hole drilled through to the side of the slide). You can purchase them at any hardware store or at places that sell trailer parts (like McNaughtans in Parow). At Fastener Warehouse in Brackenfell they were fairly inexpensive (can't remember the exact amount, but definately under R50).

Yes, I bolted brackets (square tube) to the downstand lip of the rim at the top of the bin and then bolted 3 aluminium square tube bearers to this accross the bin to carry the slide. I again added hard compound rubber strips between the bearers and brackets to prevent things from shaking loose.

I still need to add the infill pieces on the sides.

Your idea of a storage space in the "ceiling space" sound very interesting.

The slide looks geat, actually planning on building one myself now. Just one question, what is the spec of the rubber strips you used, and where did you get them from?

Hi Andrew,
I just asked for a hard compound rubber strip.
The guys at Cape Town Rubber cut me 45mm wide strips from a 15mm thick sheet.
021 511 0850.
Up your way there's a place called TRUCO (Transvaal Rubber Co.) 011 839 2370 that seems to stock similar products.
