    Question Overnight Stop Xai-Xai??

    Hi,
We have planned and finalised our December trip to Moz but have one small problem. We need an overnight camping spot for the evening of 22 Dec before we jump back at Giryondo into SA for our last night away at Letaba. Can anyone suggest somewhere? We will be travelling from Inhambane.

    Cheers
    Andy

    Hi Andy

We did this trip in August '09 from KNP via Giriyondo, down to Xai-Xai, up to Inhambane and back via Maputo to Swaziland. The Moz locals warned crime is high in Xai-Xai (pity as we loved camping there previoiusly), so we stayed at Sunset Beach Lodge, Chidenguele, approx 60km north of Xai-Xai. A lovely place, beautiful sea views and friendly Afrikaans couple running the place. Chalets & Camping with your own ablutions, very safe. Be sure to book in advance, this place is popular.

Roads in LNP is bad, really bad, especially the last stretch from Massingir to border, unless they have upgraded since August. Took us 4 hours to do 48km! Deep dongas and roads not marked well (Fm Giriyondo to Campismo Aguia Pesqueira, Massingir where we overnited, that is). You cannot dare stop as the lidl locals (from 3 yrs up) appear from nowhere and try to grab grip on bakkie as well as caravan, some were also throwing stones at us when we told them not to do so as it is dangerous!!!

Border times are open 08h00, close 16h00 (which allows you enough time to get to Letaba by gate closing time.

From Campismo Aguia Pesqueira, Massingir to Sunset beach took us 7 hours, towing a Commander.

Been on that route, won't do it again - we were unlucky at the Moz border as their was a jampacked overlander in front of us and we had to wait our turn (1 1/2 hrs).....be sure to wait in the correct queue.....was not searched and the passing was easy.

While in Moz for the 2 weeks, we were never stopped by police (passed them every day all over), never felt in danger, but kept our guard all the time.....just not fun to be harassed by the locals on the beach trying to sell their goods as well as in Inhambane by the lidl 'runny noses'

Play dodgems on the roads north of Xai-Xai, the Chinese contractor seems very disorganized, they even managed to smash 2 of their own 25ton tippers head-on!

I am sure you will have a fab time - also read all the other very useful threads posted by forum members on Moz.

    Hi Andy,
Xai Xai is not a long haul from Inhambane but a place to stay overnight would be the Honeypot. Go through Xai Xai heading south, cross the long causeway, and then a couple of km after the causeway on the right hand side you will see Madeirarte, a place that makes VERY good furniture. The Honey Pot is on the same property as Madeirarte and should have its own sign up outside. I should have a number for Madeirarte at the office and if so will send it on to you and they can give you contact details for the Honey Pot.
    Good luck
    Cheers

    Hi Guy's

Thanks for all of your input! Noted your comments re: security and the local "rug-rats" Lidl ones! We will remain vigilant!

Found a camp close to the Masingir gate in the LNP called Albufeira Camp. Is it feasible to get there in one day from Inhambane some 550km? If so we would be able to start fresh with the beautiful but "rough" piece of road to Giryondo and it would also put us back in KNP early enough to see some game and for our overnight at Letaba.

    Cheers

Campismo Aguia Pesqueira, Massingir is a lovely, clean camp overlooking the dam - stunning views and each site is relatively private. The Overlanders have their own campsite away from the others. Some campers took a stroll down to the dam, tried their fishing skills.

Cannot comment on Albufeira Camp. To travel from Massingir to Inhambane in one day can be done but would be foolish. No 1. the roadworks alone will slow you down plus these roads are like playing dodgems north of Xai-Xai, with stops inbetween, (besides the possibility of losing a tyre or getting a speeding fine).

    Plan carefully.

I live in Phalaborwa, the best I found is to stay over at Nascer Do Sol or Zona Braza, they both are +/- 22km from Chongoene (This is 10k's north of Xai-Xai), at this little town you turn right towards Chibuto and Chokwe, in Chokwe turn right and follow the road to Giriyondo. The road from Chongoene to Chokwe is excellent, but from the turn off to Massingir (25k's) from Chokwe the road is horrible but if you keep your eyes open for potholes you can reach Giriyondo fro Nascer Do Sol in 5hrs.DON'T DRIVE AT NIGHT!!! The other place you are talking about is in Massingir, just over the damwall on the left travelling to SA, well priced but I agree....too far from Inhambane and only 115k's from Letaba.
