    Hi Jamu

I had something similar hapen to my Ranger.

Take a look under the bonet, and look at your pneumatic vaccum solenoids (see pictures)

One of mine had been bumped and broken by a grease monkey, when it went in for a new clutch kit.
The outlet pipe had been broken off.
If the pneumatic system is 'open' ,then your RFW will not engage or disengage...or worse, you'll be doing 100km/h + and it will suddenly engage

There are two vaccum pumps, one is the RFW & the other your rear diff lock.

They are R1060 ex vat (each), new from the agents, but check scrap yards.
I picked up 2 off of a Ranger that had been whacked from behind for R175 for both.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Did Ford replace the clutch?
If so, take it back, it was working beforehand, they need to fix it, point. Do not accept no for an answer and go back ASAP
If you go to Lazarus Ford Centurion, speak to Tony there and mention the forum - they need to sort this out on their cost

Nothing wrong with THE Ford, just don't have it serviced at Ford dealers anymore, just don't take it to McCarthy Midrand either.

There are some REALLY good mechanics out there and some here on the forum as well.

The mechanic flipped the 2 identical electrical sockets on your tranny.

Go under and swap them. It's happened to me as well...

    Hi Jamu

I looked a bit further into the problem.
I've attached a troubleshooting page out of the workshop manual on RFW problems.

    Hope it helps.

Ultimately Christo is right, who ever replaced your clutch is responsible.

    Hi,
My gearbox, 5th gear, was repaired and I got the same problem. (RFW light wont go on)
Had a look at the vacuum pipes and found them crossed over (they r col coded).
Now the RFW light stay on. The hubs wont disengage unless I switch the pipes, but then the hubs wont engage.

Any ideas? The trouble shooting guide do not make sense to me....

I got asked by a Ford driver what RFW stands for. A quick search just revealed this thread?

    What does RFW stand for?

    How does this function work?

When he engages 4x4 the 4wd light goes on and as soon as he moves the RFW light goes on. When he goes back to 2WD the RFW light stays on until he presses the RFW button on the dash.

What is the workings of this RFW light/function?

As much as I know, it lights up to indicate that the front wheels are locked. To disengage the button is pressed and the light goes off again once you move the lever to 2H.
So the light basically just shows that your front wheels are locked, and you are ready for Low Range

Explained in my very simple way ofcoarse.

    HCS, Spot-on!

It stays "hubs locked" so that you can shift on the fly from 2H to 4H, and vice versa. You have to come to a complete stop, select 2H, and only then will the light go off (iow the hubs unlocked) when you push the RFW button.

I also just absolutely love my Fordjie. It's just the most awesome tour-vehicle!

Hi there, i'm new to this. I bought a 2004 Ford Ranger XLT 4000 V6, when I bought my bakkie the 4x4 and RFW worked. But now all of a sudden the RFW lights stays on and when I switch to 4x4 HI or LOW the 4x4 light just comes on and start to flicker, doesn't actually engage. Then when I switch it to 2HI the RFW light stays on, even though I press the button, it's been on for a while now. Now work has been done, it just went one like normal when I went into 4x4 one time, then when I switched of the 4x4 the FRW didn't want to turn off. and no matter what I do now, it stays on and 4x4 won't engage. hope this is enought details, i'm DESPERATE to have it fixed. any help will be much appreciated.

    I suspect leaking vacuum pipe
check all pipes for breaks / cracks, if no issues there then the actuator is stuck, there is a way to get this sorted, but I don't have the details
The situation you describe is not that uncommon with the vehicles with Auto locking hubs

okay, i'll have the mechanics check all the vacuum pipes. Should I not find any leaking pipes or something, what would be my next move? sorry for the dumb question, but I've always been into fast Nissan SR20's, so this is my first 4x4 and have no previous mechanical experience or knowledge with them.

    Ferdie that sounds very steep
Perhaps phone other agents as well, try Lazarus ford and Fury ford Sandton
Also speak to guys like SAC, maybe they can do it for you for a better price. a clutch kit costs probably no more than R5k and yes, it is a lof of labour as the gearbox needs to be removed, but I don't see how they can get to R17k...

I also had my clutch replaced and found that my 4wd light starts to flash after driving above 120km/h for a while as soon as I reduce my speed the light goes off again. Didn’t have time as yet to check it but did any one else experience the same problem, and what can I look at?
